FOUR British girls and their teacher were sexually assaulted at gunpoint on a school trip to Ghana.

The terrified victims were attacked in their hostel-style accommodation by a man with a rifle while on a volunteering trip to the West African country.

It is believed a Ghanaian security guard was shot and seriously injured after trying to stop the sickening attack on Saturday night.

The pupils, aged 16 and 17, flew to Ghana on the trip that was meant to give them the opportunity to experience life in a developing country.

The girls and their teacher, who cannot be named, were understood to be recovering from their traumatic ordeal in a British hospital on Sunday night.

They landed back in the UK in the early hours of Sunday morning.

They were part of a larger group of ten schoolchildren who paid 1,200 each for the trip.

The school, which also cannot be named, partners a West African volunteering charity that supports disadvantaged Ghanaian children.

Pupils stayed in guesthouses within a secure walled compound and gardens a few minutes walk from a local beach. The dormitory-style rooms house up to six guests at a time.

A Ghanaian caretaker and private security team also live on the site in a separate staff block.

At this point, nobody should bother to help the country anymore, not worth any risks given the danger of the country.

Everybody should just stop sending aid in any form and don't send people to help.

This is the treatment people get when they come to help.

No thanks.

I don't think anybody should bother helping after this kind of damage.

How come in these cases they never post photos of the victim but do of the accused? Surely the guys identity should be hidden until proven guilty. Even if it is a pretty water tight case.

It's high time we have an honest conversation about:

1. the practicality and need to constantly send aid to these kinds of countries
2. whether or not these people are going to be compatible with western values
3. In light of the debt crisis the western world faces, we also need to seriously consider the value of these investments into the third world and developing world. resources are not infinite and money and resources do have a limit.

Our people getting raped is not an acceptable cost to pay in exchange for civilizing these people, assuming we even succeed in civilizing them.

And the poiny was that Ghana isn't some third world nation with danger around every spot. It's one the better developed countries in Africa and in the second tier of country rankings.

So saying "Oh why would they go to some dangerous third world poor country" is wrong not only for the victim blaming but it's not even accurate. Ghana isn't really known as dangerous to foreigners. Very welcoming to foreigners in fact.

Feel for the victims and the guard who tried to help them and hope this piece of shit is brought to justice.

First off I'm not a dude.

Second off I was talking from experience about the country and how it's not some third world nation with a ton of red flags for visitors. It's just like places in America. You avoid certain areas, don't go there at night, stick to these places. Have protection. And speaking from experience, Ghana treats Western visitors very well. I have no doubt that the hosts did the most to ensure safety. That's how it was with us. I never felt in danger.

But my whole point was to address those that are blaming the victims (which is shitty by itself) by saying Ghana is some dangerous third world nation (which is another type of shitiness all unto itself).

Third, isn't The Sun that racist tabloid magazine from the UK? Any Brits care to weigh in? >_>
