It means to do something on your own, without having to be told to do it.

Like, you see something that needs done and you just do it on your own. Dishes, laundry... doesn't matter what it is, you take it upon yourself to do it.

I'm pretty sure it's not initiate (or any other variant of that word), but it means something similar. Bah! I hate this.
