Seems every few months we hear about how government funding isnt signed off to try and force some other issue to get passed.

The idea of government funding needing to be signed off every so often is alien to me. How come this happens in the US? Doesnt it make it an easy tactic for the president to refuse to sign it in order to blackmail the country into passing something they dont want to?

It's like if the chancellor of the exchequer needed parliamentary approval on every budget or all government funding of everything is cut off til a new one is agreed. Only for no real reason the agreement is on an arbitrary time limit and politicians are allowed to use game show style distraction tactics to run the clock down.

Basically, the Republican Party has high jacked the government by refusing to fund it, ignoring serious issues and passing short term measures. This has been going on for at least 9 Years with them.

Have you noticed how now when a Democrat is elected, the Republicans just take away all his powers?

It sucks that the police are all owned by the Republicans, well never have a serious violent uprising.

That's the contradictions of America eating the system. This nation has long history of anti-democratic measures regardless of the party.

I dont really want to get into party politics. Im more interested in the system.

How is it theres even a process in place to allow this to happen? Is this a new thing or something thats always been around?

Im more curious how it works. Why is it even a requirement for everyone to have to sign off on the budget and why so often? Whats are the benefits?

what's even odder is that some of the few people that still get paid during a shutdown are senators, representatives and the president - who are often the very people that cause the shutdown

it's really a huge clusterfuck that amounts to holding the entire federal government hostage because of one of a few hotbutton issues out of a massive omnibus spending bill that is otherwise completely agreed on

our government is anything but efficient, and honestly, anything but representative of the people

oh, and the entire thing is often steeped in propaganda, as in "the other side is forcing me not to sign this by not including this very important provision that is necessary for the health and security of our nation!"

In the UK there have been widely reported pay freezes on public service staff (teachers / nurses etc) however members of parliament have had pay rises during this time. I can appreciate the frustration of the whole do as I say not as I do type of leadership.
