Literally every job is like this

No it isnt. One of the biggest reasons leagues get publicity and million dollar tv deals is because of the players star power. If you work in a factory and dont do as youre told youre replaceable. The NFL wouldnt have billion dollar deals if it werent for guys like Tom Brady and Drew Brees. The trade off when it comes to sports isnt the same as any other job. What hes getting at here is how a player can be cut at any moment and more than half their salary is just gone. The players actually brining in the money for the owners get a raw deal in that sense. Thats not how it works in the NBA. I disagree with the way he chose to express that, though.

I definitely think that NFL would be fine if they treated their stars as disposable. Most people were fans of the teams before the stars got there and will be after.

Why would we want a situation where we give even more power to oligarchs though?

The league will be fine but their stars make them MORE money. In the NBA, for example, the Kings likely make more money on home games against the Lakers than they do the Clippers. The Clippers are a good team but the star power of LeBron brings people out. Those billion dollar deals with ESPN are contingent on ESPN being able to broadcast games featuring those stars. They wouldnt be paying that much for any old players or teams. Its very similar in the NFL. Those TV deals have protections for networks to ensure they get to broadcast the big names and teams to more homes. The guys brining in the money for the owners are often getting shafted. Its not the same as any old job. Its the difference between the owners getting a 50 million dollar deal and a billion dollar deal.

It's not like slavery. Hate to side with the CE conservatives, but this is a dumb take.

That. Regardless of who owns your team, you follow policy just like any other workplace, or you get fired.

Yeah man I agree completely with you in terms of the NBA being a player driven league. A lot of fans like the player more than the team and will follow the player with their fandom. Football is a lot different though.

Drew Brees is a good examplehow many chargers fans were chargers fans because of Drew Brees and how many became saints fans instead when he changed teams? Now compare that to a situation like LeBron, where the most popular team is whatever team he is on

millionaires fighting billionaires, the least possible relatable conflict on earth.

to be fair though, what does an owner even do besides skim cream off the top of the players labor? highway robbery, the system would work just fine if the players collectively owned the teams while still a member
