The take home pay is less relevant than your monthly budget. How much per month of leeway do you have, what are your long term goals in terms of career and/or big purchases (like a home, starting business, etc), what safety net do you have if you lose your current stream of income, how badly do you need a new car?

Ya if your priorities are towards it. The same people that give me shit about my car either spend over 70% of their income in rent for some downtown apt or they go out to eat and bars 4 times a week lol

People shouldn't be giving you shit in the first place because that's "not" their money.

And yeah, if your life is going good I don't see why you can't.

Probably not.

I never saw much point in spending a lot of money on a consumable. You can get 150k-200k miles out of a $30k car or you can get 100k-150k out of a $10k car.

The question is whether you want to enjoy those 150k-200k miles.

Sure, a Corolla or some other appliance will get you from A to B but if one is considering dropping some real money on a car, why not have some fun while you're at it?

Personally, I think it's a bit much to drop your yearly take home on car.

I would agree with that. The issue I was looking at was the idea that a car can't be anything more than an appliance.

$30k for a new car nowadays is below average. People now are signing loans in the $35k range.

This.

But get a car that was $30-$40k, five-ten years ago. You have a lot of nice options in the $8-$12k range.

Agreed. That brand new car isn't really all that much better than something a few years old that costs half as much.

If you must get a car

I dunno where you live but there's no fun to be had on any road I know of thanks to traffic jams and slowpokes.

Well good thing I told you luxury cars that are a few years old can be gotten for $8-$12k.

If money is real tight, get a bank loan and youre paying $150-$200mo for 3 years.

Worst case scenario, drive a $1000 shitbox and dont have a car payment.
