Watching with the English dub for both, the lip sync is off and normally I prefer subs but it feels more authentic with Britishy-voicing.

Hellsing was alright, I was kind of drawn in by the OP. But it never quite reaches greatness for me because I never felt fully in tune with Seras' character development and the show's themes. Like, there's all these pieces and moments that are meant to fit together but they never quite connect correctly. Integra didn't feel consistent. The villain cast is also kinda weak, the Valentine brothers were cool for a bit, but the issue with the action is that any time Alucard enters a confrontation it's the same formula of Alucard getting chopped, reforming, and then scaring the villain to death. The Vatican guys felt like a dropped plot point. Incognito was a snooze. How vampires really function could've been explained a lot better, like early in the show they say Seras shouldn't go out in daylight but then she does and is fine?

It sounds like I'm complaining about everything but I think there was clearly massive potential for the show that it couldn't reach.

One thing I dont like about Ultimate so far is that the presentation is a lot more... anime-y, the original felt more in tune with western animation which fit the setting.

I'm mainly excited for Ultimate to have a proper villain, Incognito was flaccid. I dunno how far Alexander goes but I know about another guy whose is maybe a Nazi or something

Okay so in this anime too Alucard said being in the sun meant burning and a slow death, but the sun was clearly shining through the skylight at the museum when both Seras and Alucard were there

The original is a fucking slog when compared to Ultimate. Even when it isn't compared to Ultimate it's still barely mediocre and at times just bad

I liked Seras in the original, or at least what they tried to do with her for a while. I don't like how she's just comic relief in this

Anderson is pretty sympathetic in the context of everyone else in the story being a genocidal psychopath or ditzy

I thought he was already kind of established as beyond human when they talked about the regenerator stuff but whatev. I suppose its almost equivalent to Seras drinking

Well I gotta say. The resolution is a little disappointing. I dont see why it makes thematic or narrative sense for Alucard to revive except to make Integral happy, but like the point was that Alucard wanted someone human to finally kill him, which The Major accomplished. Maybe the speech Integral gave after The Major died was meant to be a more compelling rebuke of his worldview and claims to humanity, but I didnt really feel it. And like, Alucard is just a really bad dude. It's hard to sympathize with him at all except in his death.

It was a good ride but I think it would've been better if it ended before that ending timeskip.

Abridged was okay but I dont think the later episodes ever surpassed the line I quoted. It has a better ending than Ultimate though lol

The beginning of the manga/ultimate up until roughly about halfway through is really really awesome. As soon as the big invasion of london happens, though, everything starts rapidly falling apart up until the crappy end. It's a really big misuse of a cool cast of characters

Yeah I wouldn't necessarily disagree. The sudden destruction is enthralling but the pacing falls apart considering how the next 3.5 hours occur in a night

And like the themes of the last bits with Alucard's fate vs Anderson and Walter and then Alucard coming back is just all confused to me
