Scallops are my kryptonite regarding seafood. I want to like them so bad, and they seem to be one of the most well-regarded foods among seafood connoisseurs... but I cannot get into them at all. :<

Love it, a quality cooked salmon, halibut, or scallop can be comparable to a steak or ribs if prepared right.

I pretty much enjoyed all seafood i've had.

I think it's largely a geographical issue. I live in MN (basically as far from the ocean as you can get in North America), so freshness is already an issue - but on top of that, nobody in the area knows how to fucking clean them. I've ordered scallops at least five times from various, generally well-regarded restaurants & not once have I gone a meal without experiencing the unfortunate, unexpected crunch derived from a few pieces of silt that hadn't been cleaned out during preparation. And whenever I'm in a city with good seafood like Boston or Seattle, the risk of scallops still being crappy combined with my limited time there always leads to me straying away from anything scallop-related.

The inherent, gummy texture of scallops is kind of an issue too though - but for all I know that's just another example of chefs in my area not knowing how to prepare scallops properly.

If they are gummy, they aren't cooked right. They should have the consistency of a slightly firmer lobster.

That's what I thought.

I guess the unfortunate circumstances are that, unless I straight-up move to a city with good seafood, I'll never experience truly great scallops because the risk will never be worth it.

:'(

That is unless somebody gives me specific pointers to restaurants where I know my scallops won't be overcooked/undercooked/not cleaned enough.

The best dish I've ever eaten was based on seafood.

It was called "The Torpedo". It was basically pan fried shrimps with some hot chillies, garlic and other spices, along with shredded hard mozarella cheese wrapped by a patty made of Red Drum meat, this "pocket" was then put into a batter of corn flour & beer & spices, then fried, then dipped into the batter again and deep fried a second time.

Once I cut into it and the shrimp with the melted cheese came out, a tear literally rolled down my face. And the taste was phenomenal, It came accompanied with plain white Rice, Fried Plantains and a basic salad made of shredded carrots, chopped lettuce and tomatoes, with a simple vinagrette (vinegar, lemon juice, oil, salt, pepper).

Baltimore is a good place to visit if you really want some authentic, great seafood. The inner harbor has some quality restaurants.

I didn't like any seafood a a kid, but i quite like fish now.

I developed a late liking for several kinds of shellfish, but i also developed allergies to them shortly after. Life has gone "AHA, if you eat that thing you like, you'll break out into hives!"

I also have a strange craving for mussels once or twice a year. Frustrating considering i've never liked them.
