The original English translation actually contains Aerith in an unused part of the script, but the game had many translators and little editing, so the understandable translation error got in. Of course later ports have fixed this, other games call her Aerith, and so it's weird people act like it could somehow be Aeris still.

Translators knew Aerith didn't sound right so they changed it to Aeris.

No, they just assumed the sound was representing an s instead of a th since it's used for both in Japanese transliteration. It was impossible to know without someone telling you, and back then translation was unimportant and they got little feedback which is why stuff like "this guy are sick" is in the game.
