Like..

He's got a clear cinematic vision and great attention to detail but there are other directors who can offer that and he's legitimately bad at script writing, plotting, characterization, theming, and editing, and he's at least inconsistent on action direction because it's hard to see what's happening in his action set pieces.

No it wasn't. He adapted many of the panels directly from the book, which deserves legit props, but it doesn't pick up on any of the themes the book is angling for, or the fact that the book is extremely critical of the Randian politics inherent in super hero narratives to such a degree that it's explicitly blaming the shittiness of its setting on the concept of the superhero. By proxy that criticism extends to us as a reader and 20th century pop culture taking on the superheroic ubermench like Batman or Superman and mythologizing them as kinds of ideals, despite the fact that their key aspects of the these characters and their methods are explicitly anti-freedom. And yes, 'death of the author' and all that, but we really can't ignore the political climate in which Moore is writing these books.

TLDR: Snyder's surface reading of the text was so shallow he managed to reach the polar opposite thematic conclusions of the original text, which is tragic because no one who watches that movie will understand why it shows up on so many 20th century GoAT literary lists. And it's not a good enough movie to encourage them to read the graphic novel.

The Watchmen comic is one of the best books of all time. Written or drawn. Actually made it into Time Magazine top 100 books of all time. The only graphic novel to do so.

The Watchmen movie is a mediocre edgy action movie that is only watchable because of Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The most sexually confused movie I've ever seen. I can't tell you how many sessions I had staring at Leonidas bare ass as he looks out over Sparta. Gerry Butler in this movie is partially responsible for my sexual awakening and for that Snyder will always get my props. Thing is I don't think Snyder or Miller are aware of the inherent homoeroticism of its subject matter. There are some lines in the script which suggest they are not entirely aware of what they're doing. More for us, I guess. Fun fact, the men who carried Billy Porter into the 2019 Met Gala were wearing outfits inspired by Xerxes character design from this movie and that spectacle was everything.

Back on topic. 300 is his best work IMO, but that's primarily because the source material and Snyder's vision seem to draw inspiration from very similar places (for better or worse). The result is a movie that is totally on point always, and that lets you focus all your attention on Snyder's very pretty cinematography. 300 was an excellent choice for him.
