Fewer than half of Americans consider religion to be an extremely or very important part of their identity, according to a new study.

The American Family Survey, an annual national survey conducted by the Deseret News and the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy at Brigham Young University, found that just 43% of Americans viewed religion as a core component of their identity in 2018.

For Millennials and even GenXers, the most common religion is no religion at all. The Nones claim 44% of the 1829 age group, and nearly that (43%) among those who are 3044.

This is more than twice their market share among Americans older than 65, just 21% of whom say they are atheist, agnostic, or nothing in particular. However, even that 21% is a five-point rise from where the over-65 group was in 2015, when just 16% identified themselves this way.

This.

Religiosity tends to decline when a country is doing well.

But countries in which poverty, violence, and ignorance thrive? Religiosity tends to be higher.

I think East Asia also has a large number of atheists if you add China, Japan and South Korea, that's over 1 billion+ atheists.

China had it forced out via communism, it didn't happen organically like in Japan and SK.

Saying you're moral just because you believe you'll be rewarded when you diemeans you're not a good person.

You say that, but just because aren't religious there is that spiritual aspect. How many of those kids day they are spiritual, but not religious. People will find something to cling on. You all have too much faith in people.

Nothing wrong with being spiritual. If someone wants to pray in the privacy of their own home, there's absolutely no harm.

Religion is declining because people(especially younger folks) are tired of the religious preaching one thing, then turning around and doing the other. They're tired of old people being scammed by other old people who promise them God's blessing if they give them a 'modest donation'.
They're tired of people being them being against porn or prositutuon, but not caring about little boys being molested.

Hypocrisy is killing religion.

Organized religion is on the decline but disoraginized religion, or syncretism, is on the rise. Religion is hardwired into humans. Scientificism will never be a replacement for religion as it has no answers for our moral quandaries. Moreover, there has been a resurgence in new age mysticism with millennials like astrology that provide them with narratives for their lives and hope and answers for the future.
