During my teenage years I use to work in fast food and restaurants all the time. Some restaurants were cool in giving free food to their employees but most places won't and they throw away shit all the time. Like this pizza place I use to work for when I was 17. We would throw away so many left over shit instead of giving it to us to take home and shit. On the days that the bitch boss isn't there then we'll take it home. Makes no damn sense especially the food we throw away are literally like 20 cents to make.

many retail industries have a genuinely mean spirited attitude towards the people they employ.
note: I realize that "food industries" might be considered separate from "retail" but fuck it I lump them both together.

Most companies try to cut down on cost and that's often one of the first things thrown out.

My job used to give us free beef jerky, but they cut that out because beef jerky was deemed "too expensive."

Technically that would be a fringe benefit that would need to be included in the employees wages and taxed accordingly. Its easier to throw food away vs. calculating a value and adding that amount to the cash wages of employees.

Mom and pop places always let me take home as much as I wanted.

Franchises and chains, they were stingy as fuck except Dominos.

Everything in McDonald's has to be accounted for, x amount of potatoes came in, x was thrown out, report that to the DM so they scale shipment correctly for this time next year.

All the food jobs I had as kid would feed the employees.

Some by sending food home instead of tossing it, others actually gave a free meal at lunch, some did both.

They make more money by throwing away food that they could give to their employees instead?

We tried that at a place I worked at for a while. You would be surprised the number of steaks that started being "miscooked." Yes, seriously.

lmfao, man I have stories here.

But, basically: they don't want to give free food because it can be abused by employees and will destroy the food cost.

Realistically: most managers will let their employees eat free, especially since there's not enough time during a lunch break to retrieve food from somewhere else. And that's even if you get a lunch break.

Does it go like this?

"Ah shucks, I made this steak rare when the customer asked for medium rare. Guess I'll have to eat it."
