Board 8 > Character Contest Strength Ranking - Day 3 ft Dark Link, Mickey Mouse

This is a new topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if both members of said duo are named in the title of a game (Banjo-Kazooie, Sam & Max Hit the Road, etc).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Dark Link: High Midcarder - GameFAQs has moved past the era of voting for a character on the merits of design and what they represent (except for TJF), and onto the era of voting for characters they actually care about. Case in point: Ganondorf looked shaky last contest even as Zelda was never better. This is as simple as docking a tier from where I would place Ganondorf, acknowledging that Dark Link isn't the recurring antagonist of practically the entire series.

M. Bison: Low Midcarder - The easy range for any second-tier Street Fighter character (i.e. also Ken and probably Akuma) who doesn't have something extra going for them (Chun-Li).

Mickey Mouse: Low Midcarder - Kingdom Hearts is the only reason anyone on GameFAQs would actually care about him, and its strength has never been worse. Still, like Pac-Man (who has zero games GameFAQs cares about), his icon status should keep him firmly above the Fodder Line.

Finally, something I would recommend considering is allowing characters to be voted on retrospectively. That would open up a bit more work by potentially forcing you to keep a record of everyone's individual votes on each character, though there's so few of us participating in this series anyways that it might not matter. It especially seems odd to me that a day featuring the character at the center of the only contest thing that's registered post-contest (Sheik) will go down with only three votes - though, to be fair, she wasn't featured in the title. If you opt not to do this, I would advise explicitly stating that retrospective votes aren't allowed in future topics' OPs.

I agree with your reasoning and rating on Mickey and Bison. I say Dark Link is a Near Elite though. He may not have a major role in the games but he is still Link and will get a lot of support based on that.

Sorry for missing the rest of your nominations from Day 2, I've added them now. Also I don't think I will allow retroactive voting for previous days. As long as I get at least 3 ratings for a character with good reasoning I think that will be fine. If a new release or something comes out that might boost a character's strength I will consider bringing them up for a re-rank. I'll try to include all 3 characters up for rating in the topic from now on though.

M. Bison (Street Fighter) - Fodder-line. Would only take a marginal step down from his Villains Contest performance to land him here and I'm not expecting him to hold up too well. Especially not after Guile bombed.

Mickey Mouse - Fodder-line. I don't think anything he's in other than Kingdom Hearts is remotely important to any sizable amount of the gamefaqs demographic, though it helps a bit that he's so recognizable and ubiqitous. And KH characters not named Sora aren't worth much at this point either:

I'll just assume "everything else other than KH" lets him catch up to around Riku's strength.

Dark Link (Zelda series) - Midcarder. Could see him doing a bit better than Epona but hyping him too much feels kind of...dismissive of the site's voters - as if they actually are "Zelda drones" rather than people who like Zelda games and the most prominent characters therein. Nobody cares about Dark Link and I gotta BELIEVE that ends up hurting him. Only willing to go so far with that though, I mean, these are the people who voted a horse over Ike.

I think that M. Bison would easily outperform Guile. Guile just hasn't aged well as a character since his peak in the 90s.
