I have something of a phobia for the bottomless empty never ending abyss that we call the ocean. Seriously, it's so bad that I struggle to play the water levels on Donkey Kong Country.

Even with my phobia with the deep ocean, I still find it interesting as hell. I love videos comparing our tallest buildings and mountains to the depths, what kind of creatures live down there, how far we got down, what wreckage and gems are found and even the unknown. Maybe a real-life Godzilla? Maybe aliens? Maybe Emerald Weapon? Scary as fuck and yet very interesting.

How do you feel about space in comparison? Is it less visceral for being mostly inaccessible in comparison to the beach?

I dunno why but the deep space don't scare me anywhere as near as the deep ocean. I guess maybe because pop culture painted space with brimming stars? Or maybe living on the surfaced has adjusted me into seeing the endless night sky all my life that it doesn't bother me?

I'm not afraid of surface level ocean. I could be on a boat in the middle of the ocean and be completely fine. It's when you peak down into the waters that makes me shake.

I hadn't thought of that. I don't share your phobia, but the vastness of the ocean still impresses strongly upon me. Even snorkeling in "shallow" areas, you're not swimming for more than 30 seconds before the ground is 20 feet below you, and nothing looks like it gives a remote-controlled fuck how reality worked just a minute ago.

you ever seen that video of the diver recording his own death as he plummets into the ocean depths? i think it was related to an issue with his oxygen tank

If it's the recent one, he actually survived. The water was so cold that is preserved his body in time for them to come back and grab him.

The funny thing is that this is exclusive to oceans for me. I can watch a dude diving into a deep lake or river and be fine with it because usually you see the bottom.

I have similar feelings with water, but going past Neptune scares me way more. Even though there's stuff beyond that, it's light years away. This is perfectly encapsulated in Stargate SG1 where Jack and Teal'c end up on a stranded course towards past the gas giants. They were doomed simply because there weren't any ships with Hyperspace capabilities around to save them, iirc. So they would have drifted endlessly. Despite going to other galaxies all the time.

At the beach I dont wade out further than waist deep. Fuck that noise.

Its different if Im geared up, Ive had some great scuba experiences. Deepest Ive been is 110 feet. If those kind of depths didnt have an inevitable feeling of euphoria that washes over you, it probably would have been a bit more nerve wracking. Going up seems like it would be the worst. Youve gotta take your time, so youll just be floating there, looking out into seemingly unending distance. You dont see anything, but then again, you havent looked behind you...

Scuba has just enough gear that you could feel like you're insulated and protected, so I kinda get it.

The closest I can come to this phobia is when I imagine going on a spacewalk. Christ. Just that one rope. That's it. That's all that's keeping you from the closest approximation to infinite emptiness in reality.

I think pop culture plays a lot into our phobia. Although there have been recent movies about a livable society in the ocean, most of it has shown use giant monsters.
