Only Total War game I've played is Rome Total War, which I recall liking a fair amount.

What makes this one worth getting?

it's a strategy game. most DW fans probably won't like it. it's a totally different game genre and style.

Can you still just focus on management and policy and let the battles play themselves out? I preferred playing rome like that. It becomes more like civ or risk.

Just play a Paradox game instead.

I don't know what that is. I mean yeah I could always play nobunagas revenge or rotk too, but something fresh could be good.

Europa Universalis 4 has 3679 hours played from me. (It's been out for 6 years)

Civ 5 is around 300 hours.

That is the difference there for me

I keep seeing ads for it, and I like Total War and the RotTK setting... The irony is that those ads made me look into Dynasty Warriors 9. It sucked at launch, but they keep patching it and it's actually very worth it now, especially at the $20 I paid. It runs well and they added some features. It's easily the biggest turn-around in opinion I've had since the original TimeSplitters at the PS2 launch. I hated that game when I played it, but a year later I tried it again and was all like "why didn't I like this?!" DW9 is a different situation, in that they improved it and increased the content (you can be a beast master now!), but still...

You could still go to the battlefield in 1, and you could still command strategically in 2 and 3, so I have literally no idea what you're complaining about here.

Runs extremely smoothly while still looking really good, the diplomacy is actually not trash this time and the AI is far more willing to make more trades like territory for food/cash, the food system from Brittania actually works here, there's both romance mode (where generals are like Dynasty Warriors heroes) and records mode (which is more like Shogun 2 with hero retinues) for both kinds of playstyles, turn times are practically nonexistent, vassal spam is actually a valid campaign strategy that doesn't fall apart as people start despising you for doing well in the endgame, the endgame is a lot more approachable since you just have to control 3 specific regions at the same time, and the optional Chinese voiceover has been noted to actually be very good.

For the first time in a Total War game I feel like the campaign map is more than just context for the big flashy battles. The AI in this one is doing some particularly sneaky things, but it doesn't feel like you're focused overmuch for being the player; they'll just as often stab each other in the back.

Only bad parts so far is a lack of information presented when you're offered deals, Yuan Shao is kind of broken and vassalizes everyone with pretend money if you ignore him and he snowballs, towers and trebuchets seem to have too much damage, and some other minor things that will probably be tweaked (definitely by mods as soon as mod support comes out). For a release version, the game really solid.

It's a very fun (and likely familiar) setting and you don't have to learn five million unit types like in Warhammer. It's not overly complicated, but you still have room to optimize as you learn the game better. A LOT of campaign micro is cut down (you don't have to shuffle around pressing a ton of buttons when an army is demolished or recalled). And honestly, it's worth trying out some Total War at some point, because huge battles with an emphasis on morale management is a fun macro playstyle for a strategy game.

I really dunno how to sell the game other than just watching videos on twitch. I was prepared for this game to be trash like Thrones of Brittania and it's ended up a massive surprise.

People can like multiple genres Zikten. I really like the Koei Musou series, but also quite a few Strategy game series. Total War being one of the few exceptions, played Rome way back when, but never really managed to get into it and like it.
