If the scam preys on those with compromised mental faculties or the elderly, I'm sympathetic.

If its average Joe Sixpack who should have known it was too good to be true from the get go, not so much.

Varies from situation to situation. I took care of an elderly man who was scammed by Publishing Clearinghouse. They scammed a lot of elderly people. Definitely felt bad for him

Known others who fell for obvious scams. One stopped by their house and offered to do house repairs. Paid in cash. Never even got contact info (if they were even legitimate to begin with). They *shocker* never came back

Then there's the scams of churches and leeches of bad relationships, but that's not for this topic

This. Some scams are crafty enough that I can understand how a person fell for them. Things like that mean you probably need someone else to have power of attorney (and you potentially need a helmet 24/7).

Most scams are just a numbers game. There's a sucker born every minute, and there 525,600 minutes in a year. If you just keep casting line, you'll eventually catch a fish.

I remember there was once a video on YouTube of a man who infiltrated a work-from-home scam and he tried to warn other marks involved but they just ignored him and even reported his activity to the scammer. I cannot imagine being blinded by greed that much lol.

I recently had somebody drive up next to me when I was leaving the mall (I was there to play Pokmon go) and they said to me I just applied for a job at Macys, and its a 45 minute drive from my house. I have been without a job for about two months now and it took me my last cent to get here. If you have anything you can spare to get me some gas to get home, Id really appreciate it. If not, thats fine too.

And I gave them twenty dollars.

They were so thankful and said that they would remember my kindness always.

Did I get scammed? Probably. Do I still feel good about it? Yes.

I've been in a similar situation. I offered to meet the person at a gas station and pay for a few gallons of gas. The person said it would be a bother to have me do that so cash is preferred. More than likely it was a scam but I just gave maybe $6 in small bills and change to the person.

I can definitely see why my friend kinda scolds me whenever I give cash. At least if I just give food, or gas in this case, it is much less likely that said person will use that cash for some less than honest purpose.

As othera have said depends. Some scams can be crafty. There was a woman in a city I used to live near that took "donations" for a "church". Forget what humanitarian bs she came up with for what the donation where going towards though. She was funding her rich lifestyle in reality. To make matters worse that city actually had a law that you had to have a permit to panhandle and she would run off or call the cops on homeless people trying to beg for money.

Number 2. The amount of people who fell for the college and university fantasy is unreal. It's like a conga line that goes of a cliff. Also even thinking about going to seek medical attention. Financial ruin is a certainly for all but the sniffles. Just kidding. They'll shake you upside down for that. You're better off fighting through with webmd than going into the Lions den. Also if you are male and get married. Really no further explanation needed.

The first time they're scammed, complete sympathy. We want to be able to trust other people, and that can be easy to abuse especially if someone's not expecting it.

The sixth time though? That's a bit different.

It depends. There are some scams that are really hard to identify, like Bernie Madoff or Theranos, that swindled a lot of professional investors.

And then there are scams like the Nigerian Prince, which actually dates back to at least the 19th century (when it was known as the Spanish Prisoner). Obviously someone must be stupid enough to fall for these swindles or else they wouldn't continue to exist for hundreds of years. I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone that dumb.

Depends. The elderly are easily scammed when they have alzheimer's. Some are scammed or taken advantage of by their own family and friends.

Some people are just naive or easily preyed upon when they think someone is in need, and learn the hard way you can't trust everyone.

On a similiar note, someone at a gas pump asked for money because they were trying to get back home, but their car had broke down and they only had enough money to fix it, but not get home (they lived out of state). I gave them a few bucks for gas.

I saw them a few weeks later at the same gas station and had a moment of recognition when they came up to me to ask me for money. I looked at them, and they booked it.
