Right now some Japanese song is playing while Trump walks around saluting or something. I'm not quite sure what is going on. But it's some ceremonial thing

The new Emperor is the grandson of the dude who was emperor during WW2. Emperor Hirohito. It's weird that in all these years we still are only 2 generations apart from that war

Nothing really. It's all for show and tradition. The end of WW2 stripped the emperors of any real power

Even before that they weren't really in charge. During the war, the leader of the Japanese army was the real ruler of Japan

And in ancient times Shoguns would literally lock up Emperors in palaces and make them do what they say

Japanese Emperors really actually have a long history of not much power

to my understanding, between meiji and showa, the emperor had absolute power (though the government also had a parliament / constitution) but as a formality didn't exercise that power

I remember when Obama met Akihito (son of Hirohito and father of the new emperor) and Fox News went off on Obama for bowing to the son of the 'leader' of an Axis power. Even though the guy was 12 when WW2 ended. >_>
