The new Emperor is the grandson of the dude who was emperor during WW2. Emperor Hirohito. It's weird that in all these years we still are only 2 generations apart from that war

During the war, the leader of the Japanese army was the real ruler of Japan And in ancient times Shoguns would literally lock up Emperors in palaces and make them do what they say Japanese Emperors really actually have a long history of not much power ...
