It's hard to define most of the mentioned bands as alternative if you take their full discographies into account.

Like offspring and melvins started out more punk then moved into alternative. And in the case of melvins, beyond.

Smashing pumpkins might be the only one mentioned to really foot the bill.

And yeah I have no clue what rhcp would be classified as. Almost a genre of their own. So cal genre.

Typically my mind goes to stp, Alice in chains, pearl jam, soundgarden and even bush when I think of alternative bands. All of their work fits into the category.

The problem is that they straddle the alternative and pop genres.

I don't even know. Radiohead? I'd say Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, or Red Hot Chili Peppers but they fit more in genres other than alternative.

Funnily enough, Gin Blossoms came out in the 80s. Although it was the late 80s so putting them as the 90s cool.

Smashing Pumpkins, no question. Gish, Pisces Iscariot, Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and Adore were all fantastic albums.

This is kind of hard to really pin down since a lot of 90s alternative bands started in the 80s.

Kind of hard but probably a toss up between Beck, Primus, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Cake, Dinosaur Jr.

This is my favorite band in general.

But if we're talking bands that released their first album in the '90s, it's a toss up between Red House Painters and Stereolab.

The easy choice would be Nirvana.

However, I'd probably go with either Live, Bjork, or Garbage.
