Of course it is. Why are republicans so fucked up? It is obvious that they care only about power and everything they do is done to further their attempts to have it. Attempts to gerrymander should be a crime, tbh. There are no legitimate uses for it, all it does is attempt to control the people by grouping them up in ways beneficial to those in charge.

Illegal immigrants shouldnt be counted in census figures that determine the amount of house representatives a district receives.

What is the actual argument in support of them being counted, other than usual Republicans evil!!?

Trump administrations decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. ..... And months after urging President Trumps transition team to tack the question onto the census, he wrote the key portion of a draft Justice Department letter claiming the question was needed to enforce the 1965 Voting Rights Act the rationale the administration later used to justify its decision.

Those documents, cited in a federal court filing Thursday by opponents seeking to block the citizenship question, have emerged only weeks before the Supreme Court is expected to rule on the legality of the citizenship question. Critics say adding the question would deter many immigrants from being counted and shift political power to Republican areas.

what does this mean for legal permanent residents? if citizens are the only ones who can vote than what does it matter that representation for legal citizens should be reflected in politics? like, isn't that the point? representing the CITIZENS in the government laws isn't what we want....? what's the scandal here exactly?

There are a lot of people here legally who are not citizens or cannot vote. Beyond that, the census data is used for more than just congressional representation; federal funding is often based on that as well.

Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed.

Citizenship status is irrelevant. Representative numbers are based on the population of a state and not the number of citizens it has.

federal funding should reflect and serve the citizens as that is its purpose. is this scandalous or not obvious or what? nothing was said of permanent legal residents though so im wondering about that.

The constitution says they are supposed to be counted.

Illegal immigrants shouldnt be counted in census figures that determine the amount of house representatives a district receives.

Then change the constitution to do that. Don't try to skirt around the constitution.

The constitution is quite clear that more than just citizens, are supposed to be counted when determining the number representatives a state should have.

The point is to say that districts don't have enough citizens in them so the maps have to be redrawn and that creates an opportunity to gerrymander.

There's also the issue that since non-citizens are counted for the population when determining representatives(this is constitutionally required) and other things, if the question encourages people people to not respond then we get less accurate population counts. There have been concerns that the results would be used by the government to determine where to send ICE agents so there is a reasonable possibility that it would result in more non-citizens(including legal residents) avoiding the census and therefore not being counted.

So basically it would punish sanctuary cities and states that use the undocumented people to inflate their population?

The issue is with how the question is being used to behave unethically, break the law, and subvert the constitution by republicans. Cut and dry, objectively, demonstrably wrong

Yeah kinda feel like we shouldnt gloss over that part. The whole thing is ridiculously unethical but the trump administration has made it pretty obvious that they dont care about the constitution.
