R.I.P. Kaito and Kokichi. I'm half and half on this class trial. On one hand, seeing it play out was entertaining. On the other hand, I kind of guessed that Kaito was the culprit from the beginning. I'm not sure if that was supposed to be easy to figure out or what. I enjoyed the last class trial more but Gonta completely came out of left field for me at least.

I'd miss Kaito a lot more if Maki hadn't fallen for him. Now, Shuichi has a chance at least. It's not like his other options are that good. If Maki is the current holder of best girl torch, obviously she can only be available for the main character. C'mon now... I'll miss Kokichi for being entertaining despite him getting Gonta killed.

Anyways, I liked the little throwback to the very first execution seen in DR1. I don't really like the Monokubs coming back. They should have stayed dead. However, if this means Keebo gets some action, I'm all for it. No idea how Junko will be incorporated into this game. The real Junko should be dead and Junki A.I. was already dealt with during the events of the second killing game. It'd be amusing if this was Junkobot or something silly like that.

I'll probably finish the game today and then start working on that platinum trophy if this Treasure Hunt game doesn't continue to fuck me over.

There's still a ton of game left. The final chapter is easily the longest chapter in the series, and it's not one that you want to break up over 2 days. It's pretty wild.

Yeah, I want to say the final trial alone took me like 4-5 hours. It's a doozy.

I'm not too far in but the mastermind isn't following the rules of this killing game. The shot put ball found in the hidden room has pink fibers stuck to it. IIRC, Kaede wrapped the original shot put ball in her vest which was pink. Therefore, I don't think baby girl was the actual killer. The mastermind set her up which is very shitty to do.

I also find it strange that the door to the hidden room was in the girl's restroom. Junko is a girl but the hidden room from DR1 was in the boy's restroom if I recall so the genders do not really matter. I'm not sure if any of the remaining girls could be secretly the mastermind but it's a theory I will hold onto for now.

Lastly, I'm not so sure everything regarding the outside world is as it seems. I have nothing to go off of besides this killing game being broadcasted to some kind of audience but it's what I think.

Overall, I liked the game. I found it to be pretty enjoyable and I will slowly work on getting that platinum trophy since it seems to be really tedious. However, I still have mixed feelings about the ending but I will delve into that later on in the post.

First, I think the presentation of the game and the user interface was superb. It felt like a huge step up from the previous games. I really enjoyed how everything looked from the transition screens to the music icon blasting in the top right corner. Speaking of the soundtrack, it was great just like the rest of the DR games. Standout tracks were Beautiful Lie, Cool Morning, and Despair Searching in my opinion. Graphics were good for this style of game. Voice acting was great.

I also enjoyed this cast of characters greatly. There were some duds just like in all DR games but this was a really solid cast of characters. Many of them had interesting designs and backstories. One big complaint I have is killing off the more interesting characters first and leaving the more boring, unlikable characters alive as the game continues. That's unfortunate. Another smaller complaint I have is with the protagonist. I like Shuichi but Kaede would have been much better. Shuichi is a doormat and far less interesting. Keebo, Kaede, Ryoma, Kirumi, Gonta, Miu, Maki, and Korekiyo are my more liked characters. Tsumugi was just there until the end. Himiko and Tenko were fine. Angie was an annoying bitch. Kokichi felt more like a poor man's Nagito. Shuichi was cool but too much of a pushover. Rantaro was barely around. Kaito was alright.

The general gameplay is the best in the series. I loved how the class trials played out usually and the minigames were superb. Debate Scrum, Psyche Taxi, Hangman's Gambit 3.0, and the others were more fun to play through. The class trials were most well rounded of the games. 3-3 was a massive disappointment because of the potential and miss opportunities. 3-5 felt a little too easy to figure out. Same easiness as some of the cases from DR1. 3-6 was not that good but that's on par with all of the last class trial in each game.

Jumping into 3-6, I didn't like it. Once the mystery is figured out, the game kind of drags you along in this "Hope Vs. Despair" clash. In this case, it was more along the lines of "Truth vs. Lies". Like how I generally felt with 1-6 and 2-6, the process could be sped up exponentially since it's not really a mystery anymore. Therefore, it's not as interesting. Since this is 3-6, that ending..

I still have mixed feelings on it. I do understand what the writer was going for but if he conveyed the message better, many fans wouldn't be upset over it. It felt a little too meta. I suppose it's not that big of a deal since DRV3 is set in an alternate universe or so I've read but it still leaves a sort of sour taste. I know what the characters experienced was genuine despite their personalities, backstories, etc. being fabricated. It still doesn't really sit right with me. However, the writer does leave it up to interpretation in the epilogue on whether or not the first two killing games actually took place so that was nice of him Although, he should stuck to one outcome instead of leaving it up to interpretation in order to soften the blow to the fanbase. You can also chalk it up as Tsumugi being a lying piece of shit so who really knows. Hell, every complaint of the game can be redirected as being a part of Tsumugi's incompetence. Either way, if this was how the writer wanted to end the series, then it's one way to do it. Other than this ending, the writing was pretty good.

Lastly, the most important part of this post:

Kaede > Maki > Kirumi > Miu >> Tenko > Himiko >>>>>> Tsumugi >>>>>>> Angie

My final thoughts on this whole series...

I really enjoyed playing these games. I wish I had jumped in a lot sooner. The mysteries were fun to solve. I loved many of the characters in each of the games. Music is great. Presentation is great. The plot is usually pretty good but I do feel as though it starts to shit the bed at little towards the ending but that's alright. I'm more of a "it's about the journey" kind of guy anyways. I can't say whether or not I'll replay the game in their full entirely but I will go back play around with some of the extra modes later on. I will also recommend this series to others because it deserved to be given a chance.

Never played Ace Attorney so I can only compare this to Zero Escape since I played that trilogy back in 2016. Both have their strengths and weaknesses so not one is outright superior to the other. For example I would say the overall plot and puzzles of Zero Escape were better than Danganronpa. However, I liked the cast, music, and presentation of Danganronpa much more than Zero Escape. I also think Danganronpa had a stronger trilogy overall than Zero Escape. Zero Escape really shits itself in the last game of the trilogy. I could dedicate an entire topic to the nonsense that was Zero Time Dilemma but I won't.

Moving forward, if the DR team decides to make more games in the future under the helm of a different writer. Some changes need to be made. Most notably how formulaic the games are. For the first case of each game, the victim is someone thought to be important (Sayaka, "Byakuya", and Rantaro) while the culprit is someone who wasn't really planning a murder out of malicious intent (Leon, Teruteru, and Kaede). The second case involves the past of the victim (Chihiro, Mahiru, and Ryoma) playing a part in their murder while the culprit is doing so out of their bonds to others (Mondo, Peko, and Kirumi). Third case is a double murder. One of the victims is not really expected to be killed (Hifumi to an extent, Hiyoko, and Angie) while the culprit has ridiculous reasons for murder (Celeste, Mikan especially, and Korekiyo). The fourth case involves the muscle of the group dying (Sakura, Nekomaru, and Gonta) and the culprits have noble causes (Sakura, Gundham, and Gonta). The fifth case involves some type of bait and switch (Junko being the killer, Nagito is the culprit, and victim/culprit being unknown and working together in V3). There's also a locked room mystery IIRC in every game. I think the next writer should try and spice it up a bit assuming another DR is made.

Anyways, I am a fan of this series now. Got a Monokuma keychain. Gonna keep my eye out for a good poster to hang up. I have no shame at all.

FWIW I'd highly recommend AA if you liked DR, TC. They're pretty comparable series overall, and AA is my favorite VG series ever.

There's some evidence regarding Tsumugi's lies and the ending that have been speculated upon by the fanbase. Most notably, the audition videos. They're all filmed from the same angle and in a spot that looks the same. The floor of the videos matches one of the floors from Tsumugi's lab in particular. It could very well be a coincidence, but it's been speculated upon a lot by the fanbase as a subtle hint that she faked it all. (Yes, I know that Cospox gets in the way there, but it's not like she couldn't have faked Cospox with some pink make-up to sell the whole lie. Given everything else that happened in the game, I don't think it's a stretch to say that she could have faked that.)

Anyway, I didn't know what to think of the ending at first, but it grew on me as I thought about it and even rewatched it. The final trial is such a wild ride and throws out some of the craziest twists ever at you, and it's honestly a blast to rewatch after some time just because of how crazy things go for the cast. I can see not liking the ending, but man, I just can't help but to appreciate how wild it all is.

I agree with the formulaic complaint. I love the series, but it's really hard not to draw comparisons between the games like that. I also beat the trilogy in a fairly short span, and it stood out pretty hard for me as well.

I still love that Himiko survived everything, though. She feels so random and out of place in the entire final trial and beyond, but she grew on me so much across the game that I'm really glad she made it. Shuichi and Maki were great, too. I think V3 has my favorite surviving cast overall....though I still wish that either Gonta or Kiyo would have made it too.

I'll probably end up buying the AA trilogy on the Switch at some point. I'd like to have them all on one console but that may not be possible as of right now unless I dust off the 3DS and search for each individual game.
