Like, I've yet to face anything except a couple of slugs that wasn't a legitimate threat to my entire party's life, and find myself having to avoid fights more often than not.

Get the teleportation gloves ASAP to find out how goofy the game is.

That game is amazing. Slow start. Treat fort joy as a giant long tutorial

Got those. Possibly made the mistake of leaving fort joy too early, because now when I go back all those magisters attack me. I'm around level 3 or 4 I think.

Game has an inverse difficulty. Starts off incredibly difficult due to lack of gear/skills. Once you pass a point you can freely respec outside of having to reacquire skill books. Some skills even trivialize things, teleport being one of them.

The game reminds me of a car going through gears as it goes from hard, easy, hard, easy, hard, easy, etc. You'll probably figure out what I mean as you go.

But yes, it's entirely expected to suck at first. You're at the point where character creation/party errors can be problematic, not gamebreaking, just inefficient/annoying. Gear and skill selection is sparse, and you have to be creative/smart with pretty much every fight.

I'd advise going back and clearing the fort if possible, the xp and gear can be really handy to get equipped and probably gonna hock it off soon anyways as it's all level 4 or less gear. Also nah, level 4ish leaving the fort sounds about right, though 3 is possible. This assuming a 'normal person approach'

If it helps, its best to focus on either physical or magic attacks, as spreading your attacks to both bars effective doubles enemy health. Id recommend going physical for the first playthrough, since there are a bunch of spells that do physical damage.

Fyi, doing a two man team using the lone wolf perk for each makes the game stupidly easy, as you'll basically be a God before you leave the first area, however you do miss out on some characters being with you.

Alternatively, having a 2h warrior with necromancy, and a mage that can make Elemental areas, will help a lot.

Also, summoner skills have the imp upgraded to a badass demon at rank ten. It's a fuckin tank. Oh and the turrets summoners drop are handy too

IIRC, almost every difficult combat scenario in that game can be heavily mitigated or outright inverted with creative use of teleportation abilities and low-level telekinesis.

Not as fun as stabifying or burninating their faces, but...
