Do they just link their phone to their TV (or whatever) and record, then upload it to the internet, these days? I'm just curious. Please remember I'm not particularly technically minded.

It has to be a PC game, then? Or do you just physically connect the PC to your console / TV?

Console players usually use a video capture card, which basically turns their PC into a TV, at which point they'll use whatever video recording software they prefer. PC players can skip that first step
For recording, I like OBS

I always wanted to know if it was possible to stream video *and* talk to people on Twitch with one monitor. Seems like everyone uses two monitors for this.

PS4 lets you record the last 15 minutes of gameplay. A handful of streamers on that system in particular tend to have somebody watching the stream record their runs when they complete them.

You use something like OBS to set up a scene and the scene can have multiple predefined inputs even if you aren't able to see the inputs yourself so you can do it all on one monitor but it's not recommended imo. If there's a problem you won't be able to address it without pausing the game.

Just use an Elgato capture card

This is what I use. Picked up a cheap one a few years ago, works great. With ps4 I can just stream from the console while recording to the pc.

Ok so follow up questions - would it be possible to stream the game on the PC and have a Twitch app or something on your phone or tablet to interact with people while you play? >_>

For PC I use OBS, Open Broadcast Source. It's a free to use program that lets me record virtually anything on my PC. It has its problems from time to time, but it works quite well for what I need it for. For console most people use Elgato capturing devices, either the card or a stand alone device to record.

Then you have to edit, which is fairly annoying. I use the built in Windows Movie Maker, though others use more expensive programs like Adobe Premiere.

Got a capture device that got both an TV aerial plug and Composite in, which I hook up to a USB port on my PC.
It gives me a video signal that I can record in whatever capture software I want.
The video signal on my monitor might have a big enough delay to make a difference, so I use a basic splitter so I can play on my TV at the same time.

That said, most bigger emulators supports video capture if you want to make it easy.

PS4's internal recording feature is subject to the devs deciding what you can or can't record, which requires a workaround. You basically can't stream or record Persona 5 natively for example.

I used to use this DVD player/tv screen recorder hybrid that recorded anything that was on the screen (which included tv programs of course).
Funnily, Ive actually never been able to find a good free PC screen reporter.

This. Plus using a capture card means I can have an easier time editing the footage together on PC rather than using the console's limited "video studio" or whatnot.

Put a camera in front of the tv

No joke, this is what I used to make my RE4 commentaries with when I was younger. Put my little Flip camera on my music stand. It was very precarious, not to mention awkward to play with that in front of the TV lol. Got a solid amount of views though and theyre still on YouTube for now.

I do this all the time with 1 monitor, just requires that the game you're playing isn't fullscreen and leaves enough space for you to fit chat

I did this too with my early spongebob walkthroughs before I got the TV recorder. I stacked a bunch of books and game cases together for my camcorder to rest on.
I even did this for few GBA videos which were much harder to record because it to be between the screen and you making it hard to play the game.

I got an Elgato HD60 at Best Buy for around $100-$150. It's the best one to use without getting a top-of-the-line one.

I just use the PS4's built-in recording. Nowadays you can save videos up to 60 minutes if you wanted, and you can stream to youtube. (When you end the stream, it will automatically save the entire stream on youtube, incase you wanted to edit it later or something).
