This is a new topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if both members of said duo are named in the title of a game (Banjo-Kazooie, Sam & Max Hit the Road, etc).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Thanos: Low Midcarder - Hard to say exactly what tier he fits in. This seems about right to me due to Endgame's recency bias, even if it would be high otherwise.

Donatello: Low Midcarder - I'm skeptical people really care about the Turtles or their games. Nostalgia should help, but probably not enough to make him a force.

Jecht: Low Midcarder - FFX isn't at its peak. This is also where I would place Tidus.

Agree with ranking and reasoning on Jecht and Don. I do think there are some TMNT games that people like though, such as Turtles in Time.

Thanos I will put as Fodder Line. He has some popularity thanks to the Infinity War saga, but nothing in terms of relevant game appearances. He was in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, but that game ended up being a bust.

Of course, but there's a difference between people in general liking a game and truly caring about it. Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are great examples of games that seem to fall on the wrong end of that spectrum for most people.

Thanos (Marvel) - Fodder-line. Thanos would be pretty worthless without his recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and even giving him this much credit places him pretty high compared to most video game characters originating in the 2010's. It'd also be weird if gamefaqs took much more strongly to new movies than new games, but I mean, it is gamefaqs so it's conceivable. Was considering low-midcarder but then realized that's probably where I'd peg Iron Man and putting Thanos on that level sounded wrong.

Donatello (TMNT) - Low-midcarder. While TMNT was the most important franchise for a lot of people's childhood (hence why I think he might break the fodder-line), I think it's a bit older than optimal for gamefaqs. I feel the old 1987 - 1996 TV show (and other media during that period) and nostalgia for it is still at the core of its popularity and that its various reboots and revivals probably didn't draw significant newcomers or renew interest among the gamefaqs demographic. And while you can still go play old, venerated video games you missed when they came out and come out thinking "hey, that was really good," you can't really replicate Turtlemania as an adult.

Jecht (Final Fantasy X) - Fodder-line. I feel like something hinky happened with him in 2010. Jecht breaking 40% on Zelda made Ratchet look way too good. Jecht/Zelda happened on FFXIII's western release day so that might be the reason? People didn't think FFXII's release helped Aeris much if at all in 2006 but eh. Plus Samus beat Zelda down pretty hard later in 2010 so people were left having to guess how much SFF was there - there might have been less than was generally thought. That's two potential failure points that could reasonably have overrated Jecht's strength. Now throw in Tidus and Auron looking subpar last year and Dissidia (the reason Jecht ever made a contest in the first place) being pretty old news and I have no confidence at all Jecht comes out looking good if he comes back.
