The greatest villain of all Final Fantasy was Nomura.

Nah. If we're going that route, the biggest villain was whichever major exec greenlit the movie studio, ultimately ushering in the company's doom, opening the door for... the merger.

Square had way more to gain from that then Enix did, Enix was an amazing company and the father of rpg's.

Also the merger was on the horizon before "Spirits Within" happened. The movie just stalled the inevitable for a few years.

The movie essentially bankrupted Squaresoft, while inexplicably taking goddamn forever to make DQ7 essentially bankrupted Enix.
There's no 'savior' here. It was survival.

Right, things didn't look up for either company until after some quack took over Square and had them move their headquarters because a fortune teller told him where to go. This act was also the straw that made Nobuo Uematsu stop working for them full-time.

I like Caius Ballad, simply for being the only redeemable quality in an otherwise completely irredeemable game.

Kefka has the advantage of actually winning though. Not something you see often in media.

Delita was a good choice though. He was a great villain, if not exactly a villain in the traditional video game sense

Nobuo Uematsu

He is by far the best video game composer they had. Maybe even the best in the industry.

Yes, and Square's shenanigans during the rebuild era made him quit the company.

He turns into a motherfucking spider.

Does Zeromus turn into a motherfucking spider? Didn't think so.

Dark King is also not a real Final Fantasy character.

Why not? It's not like the Game Boy games.

Square was also an amazing company at the time, and was actually the more respected and successful of the two companies outside of Japan (and was arguably seen as THE RPG company in North America). It wasn't until they effectively bankrupted themselves that it became an issue, which is why Enix effectively stepped in and acquired Square. It was presented as a merger, but honestly, in a lot of ways, it was more of a buyout. Enix had most of the power in the transaction, and it's part of why it didn't translate into greater success.

Squeenix is basically less than the sum of its parts.

It really wasn't - Square was relatively financially stable, and they were still putting out games that were hugely successful. It wasn't until the massive resource sink that was the studio happened that they basically placed themselves into a nosedive.

Even if a merger with Enix would somehow have happened even without the studio, it might actually have been more of a true merger, since Enix wouldn't walk into the room holding all the cards.

Caius. Fight me.

I don't know, I don't really feel that. I mean, if it hadn't been for Yeul and his grief for her/them, would he have become what he did? I think that's more a case of Break the Haughty, so I pity him too much to rate him that highly as a villain. I guess I kinda feel similarly about all the ones who became that way through trauma.

As for the person who said Lavos, though, isn't this supposed to be an FF poll? That means no Chrono Trigger, awesome as Lavos was =P

do you guys think a lot of the votes for kefka are nostalgia talking, or do you believe his character would be just as infamous if he were a modern villain?

I think that most of the characters that followed were mostly shit, and existed in much weaker stories overall, so he pretty much wins by default.

Kefka is essentially a 60s Batman villain, tossed into a Nolan-era Batman movie.

If he was modern he would probably be written differently.

It helps that when I played the game I thought Kefka had bloodshot eyes and didn't wear clown makeup.

Gonna buck all the trends here and say

FFXI expansion 2 spoilers

Eald'narche

But I'd say Kefka, Sephiroth, and Exdeath are the top picks of the ones listed.

Sin should definitely be listed. And in a somewhat similar fashion, Nidhogg from FFXIV was also great; shallow as a puddle but sometimes you need a big bad evil guy whose motivation never steers away from "I will never stop hating you, ever."

Idk, very few villains are overtly offensive or annoying save for the space fleas or monsters that get revealed literally in the last hour of the game with practically no build up.

What's offensive about space fleas?

Eh, stupid of me to use the word offensive there. I dont mean offensive as in PC culture which seems.to be all the rage, I mean more along the lines that it's tainting or spoiling an otherwise awesome experience. They feel like the creators shrugged their shoulders and said "Eh, idk, big space monster."

Color out of Space is my favorite horror story and I like surprise twists, but Zeromus and ESPECIALLY Necron undermine their respective villains. It's especially disappointing that these two have fantastic final boss themes.

Cloud and Treeboi are Giant Space Fleas, but the trope is Giant Space Flea Out of Nowhere. Turns out even a little bit of set up, foreshadowing, or lore is all it takes to make a villain for me. :P
