sorry I forgot I played Tales games that aren't Berseria so I concede it's probably not the worst

or at least tied for it

I like Trails gameplay more than Final Fantasy gameplay, for starters.

Pretty much any JRPG made before like, 1992

Or something like Xenosaga

I just don't get what's so awful about the gameplay in the first place. It's pretty basic, sure, but basic is fine.

The battle map size for Sky 1 at least adds so much unnexessary time to the battles that I might say it's one of the worst RPG battle systems I've experienced, yeah.

I'm incredibly against time wasting animations and artificially extending battle length in turn based games with movement. Having to move the characters in every Sky fight for multiple turns was unbearable. I think I ended up out of range for an attack in Cold Steel 1, like...5 times in my entire playthrough, and I only used the actual move option itself literally once.

Playing CSIII without Turbo mode is going to be an issue, I think. Some of those sweeping scenery shots in cutscene are already too long as it is at 2x speed. Battle moves just fine at 4x, though.

Yeah, I'm worried that CS3 is going to be a big disappointment with no turbo mode. Having that is probably a big reason I liked 1 and 2 so much more than the Sky/Crossbell games.

I assume turbo mode is a PC and possibly PS4 thing? I don't remember that at all when I played

My original playthrough of Cold Steel the 1x was fine, but I did appreciate the fast forward for my replays although even then I rarely used it.

Yeah. PC and PS4. PC's is more customizable IIRC since Durante did the port and went above and beyond.

PS4 is a flat 2x out-of-battle and 4x in-battle.

Quick amazon search tells me Cold Steel 1 Decisive Edition and Cold Steel 2 Relentless Edition are like $50 each on Amazon. Am I right in thinking these are the equivalent of the PS3 limited edition versions and that's a pretty reasonable price?

Sen has better combat. Sora has a better quartz system, or at least one that's more interesting and fun to play around with. That's only made up by the (meager) puzzle of figuring out how to best break Cold Steel's combat

When I did my cold steel playthrough topic I was definitely told there was virtually zero overlap between TitS and ToCS. I was told that there's a few name drops and some character appear in both but that's it.

No, you were told that you can understand the main plot of Cold Steel 1 and 2, which you can. That doesn't mean you're going to catch all of the nuances of every single plot detail though.

You're literally complaining about not everything being understandable in a massive series that is still ongoing.

Of course everything isn't answered yet, its not over.

There's a difference between not being understandable because it's ongoing and not being explained in the slightest when it at least seems to be a pretty critical plot point. I'm ok with some things not being explained but I just don't think it's good storytelling to name drop a plan on a consistent basis throughout an entire game without explaining it even a little bit. And that's why I compared it to BlazBlue which does the same thing.

Yes I'm sure by the end it will be explained before the stories over but by the end of the 2nd game they have given you barely anything to go on.

It doesn't mean I didn't still enjoy the game or I'm not hyped for the future games. I just think it's a pretty big point that people should be aware of if they are starting the series.

bad guys have plan. it has fancy name. it's not fully explained because suspense and spoilers. what's the issue you've still never explained it in specifics. there are very few series where the villains telegraph the exact details of their plan works in advance.

Yeah. They're also the only physical versions released in NA IIRC.

The extras aren't on the level of the PS3 LEs IMO (Art Book trumps all) but include a Steelbox, Select Music CD, and some goodies like a pin or replica mira coin.

Trails in the Sky's gameplay bored me to tears. I kinda liked the story but just couldn't drive myself to play beyond the first one because the gameplay was just... super uninteresting.

EDIT: I think it may have been the movement. The movement never made for anything interesting and just seemed to drag battles on longer than they needed to be

You'll still have a turbo-esque feature in cutscenes (L1), assuming NISA doesn't take it out for some reason. It does lag considerably on my PS4 normal, but yeah.

and i mean turbo battle has always been silly given that you can skip *every single* animation in battle but what do i know.

also I'm that weirdo who doesn't use turbo mode in my initial playthroughs and only uses it as a bonus for NG+ so I guess "slow" gameplay doesn't bother me

Honestly I bailed on Sky1 my first playthrough. I think the only way I got through it was by multitasking (like playing it during basketball or tennis or films)

cold steel is honestly a bit improvement. It's not going to win any awards or anything but it's more enjoyable.

some pretty good games with worse battle systems than sky:

chrono cross
final fantasy ix
ffviii
breath of fire (all of them)

Oh yeah, CC's battle system is pretty terrible.

I wouldn't consider it a pretty good game though.

Turbo's nice in battles since it auto-skips all animations while you hold it, but yeah, shouldn't be too big a deal for battles.

Running on the map would be the main thing slowed down by no Turbo. The one big area in CS1 was lame even with the turbo IMO, and the games have lots of running back and forth in general.
