Not for getting out of duty in and of itself but I used it as a means to exclude myself from selection so I wouldn't have to come back.

When I was being interviewed by the attorneys I said that I didn't feel comfortable sitting on a jury because, as someone with a history of attention disorder, I didn't want to vote on the guilt or innocence of someone leaving the potential of missing crucial details a possibility.

Basically I tried to make myself a poor choice as a juror.

Well thats what the penalty in Pennsylvania is. Youre only in trouble if they audit your appearances, which they do if they are short on jurors.

You really have to consider if it was YOU that were on trial. What if your livelihood was in the hands of a jury? Your future? Wouldn't you want the smartest people on your jury? Don't dodge jury duty.

Karma. Remember karma. You may find yourself in the same position this person is 5-10 years from now and a bunch of good jurors will just try and dodge because they found it inconvenient.

To be fair that's why I ducked on my last one. I know how easily flighty my mind can be during periods of little action and I don't want to run the risk of being blithe to something I really should have picked up on.

But that's just it. How is an old white lady the peer to a young black guy? How is an unemployed stoner the peer to a rich doctor? How is a racist, homophobic old guy the peer go a gay, biracial college student? The "jury of your peers" has always been a crock of shit.

CTRL F "nullification" no results.

I'm amazed at how few people know about jury nullification - basically, as a juror, it is your job to decide what is and isn't justice, not the lawyers, not the evidence and not the judge. So, if you don't feel a crime has been committed, you can vote not guilty. If you don't think the person did it, despite a mountain of "evidence," vote not guilty. The list goes on and on...

The thing is, lawyers and judges don't like jurors who know about jury nullification, so if you do, and you bring it up when the judge asks "Do you know any reason why you shouldn't be a juror," (or whatever) they will probably excuse you and send you home.

Now, of course, you should read up on jury nullification (or watch a quick video on YouTube, just don't disrupt the court/jury room or you could be tried for contempt) so you can get a better understanding of what it actually means.

I did this back in March and was out the door before lunch.

Good luck, TC.

Eh, I already know about it but I feel like thats kinda cheating. Knowing about jury nullification isnt a reason I shouldnt serve as a juror. I might be bitching and complaining about it but I dont want out if it isnt a legitimate reason why. Just cause they dont like it doesnt mean I cant serve.
