On the bird thing I dislike having pets I need to keep caged. Its why I wont have pet rats anymore. Only my first one I could let run free as he didnt chew on anything and I dont even no where to begin on training a rat

I miss that rat. He had a cage but i never shut it. It was just where he knew to go for food and water. When id go to bed hed actually crawl up on the bed and sleep on my shoulder.

Dogs are a particular tier of pet. No other species really comes close in terms of depth of companionship. The idea of a pet when you think about it all compares back to dog behaviors. Only animals that come close are of course cats, which is interesting because they aren't actually that domesticated. They just have a certain lifestyle that fits with ours and they're too small to kill us.

I've had a pretty wide variety of pets, I had a green cheeked conure named Paco, which is a breed of small parrot. I've kept freshwater and saltwater aquariums, i've had dogs and cats (currently 1 cat), i've kept and bred leopard and crested geckos. I had a Brazilian rainbow boa that was nearly 7 feet long.

Probably the strangest I had was an adult sulcata tortoise, his shell size was about 2 feet, and he weighed nearly 60 lbs. He ripped off chunks of the drywall when he cut corners too close and was ruining the house, so he now lives on my friend's granddad's farm on 20 acres of wheat grass and has a large, heated enclosure.

I worked as a manager for a popular pet supply chain for nearly 8 years, and adopted a lot of the animals that came through, and found better homes for a lot of them. I'm not opposed to anything as far as pets, minus arachnids.

Same. My cat is pretty much a lock to sleep at the foot of the bed every night.

This isn't really a debate of intelligence, it's more about why a lot of people are of the mentality that it's pretty much dog or nothing. A dolphin is smarter than a dog, but that doesn't make a dolphin a superior pet as a result.

This isn't really a debate of intelligence, it's more about why a lot of people are of the mentality that it's pretty much dog or nothing. A dolphin is smarter than a dog, but that doesn't make a dolphin a superior pet as a result.

Well, the intelligence of an animal is a big thing for a lot of people (reason I prefer mammals over everything else), and what I said was simply stating why most people choose a dog over most other animals and it's because of its intelligence, obedience, and loyalty. Not all animals are as easily trained as a dog, and that also adds to that mentality of those that feel that it's "dog or nothing".
