I look on /a/ and it sometimes it seems like half of all content being discussed or which is coming out is under this "isekai" genre. How dont people get tired of it?

That's what's so silly though. All fictional media is already an "escape" to a new world. All these isekai shows just seem like they're for people so lacking in imagination they need the show to specifically spell it out in excruciating detail.

Re:Zero is the only one I've seen that takes the piss out of the concept and exposes the genuine mental illness of anyone who would wish for something like that.

Well Konosuba too I guess but that's more like a comedy about terrible people that just happens to take place in another world.

It's just the current trend. There was a time in anime when the big escapist fantasy was piloting giant robots and saving the world. Eventually, a new thing will take over. Then we'll get annoyed at that thing.

.hack//sign was the original modern isekai series and touched on it, but that detail tends to be overlooked considering the plot went all in with the premise of using an ensemble cast and their perspectives to weave a story around Tsukasa's condition.

It's the current trend, and it's great for lazy writers who want to craft a world without worrying about how to naturally give exposition. The main character learns everything from scratch alongside the viewer. And don't get me wrong, there's quite a few isekai that I love, but it can get repetitive. Especially when 99% of them are medieval fantasy. Being sent to another world has limitless potential, yet it's always elves and dragons.

Most isekai (especially the trash ones) were written with the main character as a self insert from the writer.
