I don't understand this

"It's illegal for you to live in this country but it is legal to get a drivers liscense while you're illegally here."

That doesn't make sense to me... Either make it legal for them to be here or kick them out... You can't do both...

It is not illegal for them to live in said country.

It was illegal for them to enter said country.

But now that they are here, they are allowed to stay.

Thats not how it works.

I don't get this. There should be two options, get them on the path to legalization or deport them. Half-measures make no sense whatsoever. If they're illegal, they deserve no rights beyond basic human rights, so they should be deported. If the country decides that they should get the rights of a citizen, then the country should work on making them citizens.

Then explain this

Cuomo, who has said he is a staunch supporter of the bill, on Monday surprised lawmakers and said he would only sign it if the state solicitor general felt there were enough protections to prevent federal immigration authorities from accessing immigrants' data through the DMV database. Attorney General Letitia James released a statement Monday night saying the measure contained "ample protections for those who apply for driver's licenses."

At best, the only thing a state can really do is forward the information on to ICE. Assuming, of course, the address given for the drivers license isn't bullshit.

It's a crime to not have the right address on your license in NY. I believe it is a 100 dollar ticket if I remember right.

I would venture the guess that someone who isn't even supposed to have an address in NY, may not be too honest about it.

Just one step closer to being unable to deny these people to illegally cast votes.

Also I love this new "undocumented" term. It's like when car dealerships sell used cars. They're "certified pre-owned now!!" Doesn't change the fact the car was used.

New York State should just stop beating around the bush and offer amnesty to the illegal aliens at this stage. They think they're being crafty by legalizing one thing at a time so that the casual voters or middle ground people don't see what's really going on here.

They think we're dumb

Just have their citizens vote on the issue. Have them vote on amnesty.

States don't have the authority to do that. The best NY can do is somehow declare itself a "sanctuary state" and see where the ensuing shitstorm goes.

I don't agree with this. It's led to states like Texas having obscene requirements to obtain state IDs because they're trying to make sure undocumented immigrants can't get residency in their states, which in turn affects citizens who might have difficulty providing the giant checklist of lesser identification you require to get a state ID. This in turn affects poor citizens or people in unusual circumstances (i.e. cases where kids had custody changes, but lack some of the court papers.)

It was a MASSIVE hassle to get my state ID. I should be clear I don't support the Trump admin on immigration, but I think this is entirely the wrong direction to go about this and skirts by the actual discussion/issue, and compels many state governments to increase red tape for ID.
