I personally never probe but I always want to know. If I were a little more bold I'd probably start asking around.

I don't typically ask but there is always someone talking and I do make sure to listen when it comes up.

I couldn't care less about most of them. For the employees I've become friends with, I'd like to know what happened, but because it's not my place to know, I don't ask.

No, don't really care to be honest. I remember in my last job always getting asked, "oh what happened to so and so, where they let go and why?" I would just shrug most of the time.

Yep, if someone stands out to me as nice or a lot of the time annoying, I can keep tabs on them on our works network

I punch in their name, narrow down the search and see if their terminated or transferred etc

I'm generally curious, but 9 times out of 10 it's pretty obvious why somebody went. In the case of sexual harassment-related firings, there were times when even if I hadn't heard the allegations I would have still known because HR asked me about it later.

If it's not obvious, then it gets spread around here. I'm curious but not one to seek out the information. In fact, people will come to me cause I'm a well known associate with questions about things I don't know anything about. I shut down gossip if i can.

I often times never had to ask. When you work with 95% women, they'll know why they got fired before that person was even out there door and it will be talked about for hours. Days if it was really good

The only way someone could get fired and no one know why is if they are doing something with money. Thats pretty much the only thing that can stay private in most places.

This so much.
But it is also comforting knowing that if I mess up, I more likely will just lose some pay instead of the whole job. Maybe one day some customer will push too far, but I hope not.

I have seen some people get fired for small things while on probation. That always bites when it's a good worker.

There's a lot of laws protecting people from getting fired. What ends up protecting people the most is lack of documentation of what they're doing wrong from people and those in charge just not wanting to do the paperwork to fire them.

Lots of places want lots of documentation because they're afraid of being sued for wrongful termination. Unless it is REALLY a good one... lots of documentation.

When I was in college, I worked in sales. Not only did you have to pay for your fuckups, but you had to pay for everybody else's, too, since if the company lost the sale -- no matter the circumstances -- you lost your commission. Of course, there were no immediate ramifications for the CSRs, warehouse guys, or delivery... (Technically the managers took a minor hit when something went wrong, since they got 1% commission on the store's sales in addition to their salary.)

And what protects companies most is people just not wanting to challenge the firing or put the effort into suing the company.

This. Back when I was working in HR, the employee files had to be pretty detailed and documented for you to be fired. But when you were fired, you can be damn sure the company was 100% in the right. Disciplinary actions and warnings were filed properly.

In the 10 years I did most of the work, we never, ever had a government intervention on any file. We, of course, had plenty of dealings with the respective government agencies, but whenever we sent all the paperwork, they just didn't bother pressing on.

I would actually get pissed pretty often because management would not take ENOUGH interventions and disciplinary actions against people.

Most of the times I don't need to be.

At my last job when someone was fired, unless they did something severe like try to assault another employee or some severe sexual harassment, it took about 2 years for someone to be fired. Usually it was about a year for them to be put on "probation", then another year of them not showing any improvement before they were let go. And the whole time they were on probation other employees had to fill out reports describing everything they were doing wrong and if they were making efforts to correct their problems.

After that much scrutiny and involving that many people, someone is going to talk and the gossip is going to spread around until everyone knows.
