Because Jimi Hendrix's voice and guitar playing are much better than Bob Dylan's.

It was also Dylan's opinion.

"It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day. I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way."

No, whether I enjoy a song is only decided by my taste, not by any "authority".

And I happen to utterly despise the Hendrix cover, while loving the original and the McCreary cover to bits.

Those are all good but sweet emotion is next level.

I love the bosstones, though pretty much Let's Face It and before. Its a nice mix of ska, horns, metal and hard rock kinda. Plus I really do love Dickey Barret's voice. Boston swagger all the way. Though after Let's Face It they kinda toned it down and aren't nearly as interesting, imo. However I hardly care because you got 5 albums+ some EPs and other stuff before they went soft so whatever.

I wish people would finally realize nobody actually comments on anything posted in these type of threads.

If I commented on anything, it would probably be to just point out that 99% of the people are blatantly wrong.

I generally feel like people who think the cover is better likely only heard the original later, so their brain's nostalgia bias is firmly in favor of the one they heard first. Or the original was in a genre of music they don't personally like, while the cover so their perspective is too skewed to mean much. It's probably extremely rare that someone hears the original, really likes it, then hears the cover years later and likes it even more.

I'd say you can probably count the number of covers that were better than the originals on one hand, and most of them were made in the 80s (and even that's more my own personal biases showing).

Why do people love this version of the song so much? The Nine Inch Nails version is way better.

Trent's version is teen-angst anger and impotent rage, Johnny Cash sings it more like a broken old man who's seen too much and been through some harsh shit, and who just doesn't have the strength left to fight the dull sense of futility and despair. I personally prefer the NIN version, but I can also understand why some people (including Trent himself) get more out of the other version's interpretation. It's the last sorrowful dirge of a man too tired and worn down to feel anything other than wistful sadness.

Now we're getting into "death of the author" territory:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_of_the_Author

Should a creator's intention matter to the value and interpretation of the work, or does how a given audience receives and perceives the work trump all other considerations? As a culture we arguably tend to vacillate between the two - except in cases where the author's original intent is unknown, where we essentially HAVE to interpret based solely on extant canon.

Does it matter if JK Rowling says Dumbledore is gay if she never actually wrote it into one of her books? Does George Lucas' constant editing of the Star Wars movies mean the most recent version is always the "officially correct" one, or can we ignore the ravings of an old madman and just enjoy the version we all knew and loved for nearly 20 years? Does the fact that Tolkien saw Lord of the Rings as an indictment of industry and a love letter to pastoral English life really matter if you just want to view it as a kick-ass fantasy movie with magic rings and evil monsters?

DOES a musician's changing view of their own life and works automatically alter how we should all see music we've loved for decades? If a musician says they're embarrassed by their early work and wish they could only be judged by their most recent performances, should we accept that? Conversely, if a musician or band performs well into their old age until their performance begins to suffer and they seem less creative and less praiseworthy, should that later decay retroactively diminish their earlier achievements?

How much CAN we divorce a creator from their work? And do their opinions matter at all once the work is released and part of public awareness/culture?
