Nike is canceling a sneaker that featured a version of the American flag from the late 18th century.
"Nike has chosen not to release the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July as it featured an old version of the American flag," Nike said in a statement to CNN Business.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the athletic-wear company delivered the sneakers to retailers, but asked stores to return them to Nike after the company received a complaint from former NFL star Colin Kaepernick. The Journal indicated Kaepernick said he and others found the shoe offensive.

I saw it last night and was just baffled as to why they would use that version of the flag. I don't understand how these made it all the way to stores without anyone saying anything

No, it's clothes made out of a flag. Putting a flag decal is fine.

You misunderstand the flag etiquette code. You are not permitted to turn an actual flag into clotting, not that it's image can't be featured on clothing. The only common breach of etiquette I've seen is that the flag shouldn't be featured on disposable items such as paper plates and napkins.

The code frowns upon commercial use of the flag, like clothing. The code states that the flag shouldnt be used in clothing, drapery, or bedding, and that no part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. Patches and lapel pins are okay under specific exceptions. But it also can't be used in advertising or embroidered on items like cushions, or anything that will be discarded, like paper napkins.

What is the problem with that flag ? I know it's an older flag from when the Union had fewer states, but why is it offensive to Americans ? It's still a Union flag from what I can tell, not a Confederate one.

Nothing. The perpetually offended are finding something new to be offended by.

Because people in the past didn't live up to the golden social ethics standards of the modern era, and celebrating them in any way is basically like celebrating Nazis.

Not to mention the irony of cancelling a shoe literally made by slaves because it reminds people of slavery from ages ago.
