Honestly, SE just released a new expansion for FFXIV and from what I hear it's fantastic. I'm still on end of Heavensward so I got awhile to go but it's a great FF title. As was FFXI. I have a huge amount of nostalgia for that game. My first mmo.

FFXIV is the most popular it has ever been right now. And they just released a new expansion pack this week, and pretty much everyone that has finished it agrees it's their favorite Final Fantasy story ever.

Well, Final Fantasy became the final fantasy for the Grin developers...
Grin was a Swedish developing team that got contacted by Square, they liked the artstyle of earlier games and thought that the Nordic feeling would fit a Final Fantasy XII spinoff called Fortress.
Grin should show what they did on a monthly basis and Square should pay them if they liked it.
Half a year later, Square stopped paying without a word. Grin thought that the payment was delayed, so they kept working.
One week later, still no payment and not a single word from Square. So Grin contacted Square and asked what was going on. Square said that the Nordic feeling suddenly didnt feel like Final Fantasy. So Grin made some changes and sent to Square.
Still not Final Fantasy enough. And now they wanted the whole work faxed to them, including the music. Not by mail, it had to be by fax.
Grin made some more changes, still not Final Fantasy enough.
Grin decided to send them photos from Final Fantasy XIII.
The responds?
Still not Final Fantasy enough.
Square had decided to cancel the game. But since the contract would force Square to pay Grin if Square cancelled it, they simply decided to blame Grin for doing a bad work, which meant that they didnt need to pay them anything at all.
Since this was a big title, Grin had put all their eggs in the basket and had no money left, had to get filed for bankruptcy.
Some of the developers would later do the Payday games.
