The White Knight Chronicles are considered the spiritual successor to The Dark Cloud/Chronicle series given the same developer and usage of the "Georama" world building elements.

Aside from this, possibly Ni No Kuni, but not really.

I mean if you want an actual world building game, you're better of getting a game that's specifically in that genre. Like I dunno, minecraft or something. Dark Cloud 2 trying out all these different genres like the dungeon crawling and rpg and the georama is actually one of the detractors of the game, because none of them are as good and had level 5 just stuck to one thing, it would be.

But that's just me. I absolutely loathed the georama and was glad that level 5's next game rogue galaxy was just an action rpg with no stupid mechanics like georama and weapon breaking.

That's the thing though. I like the combo because pure world building is less interesting to me.

What would be super-awesome is if you had a game with world-shaping and building on par with Minecraft and Populous, but which also involved city and nation-building a la Civilization and Sim City.

As much as I love building massive structures or villages or artificial islands or floating airship castles in Minecraft, every once in a while I kind of feel bad that the villager mechanics are such absolute shit, and you really can't establish any meaningful NPCs or regional differences. It would be awesome if you could craft a world and then drop more robust NPCs with factional allegiances and some degree of interactivity into the world to just sort of BE.

That's my biggest problem with DC2 building. The society you create is uninteresting and the environments often feel sterile.

Also, fuck Spheda.

Spheda is fun as shit. The only bad thing about it was occasionally getting a shit setup, like a super long distance or many walls/hazards in the way with a two or three hit limit.

Hinterland is pretty fun.

Folk Tale was promising though I think the devs abandoned it. I believe it's still available though it'll never be finished
