We didnt follow anything from the comic books, which people are gonna be mad about, writer-director Todd Phillips told Empire. We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. Thats what was interesting to me. Were not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. Its about this man. I dunno. Looking at the trailer it looks kinda similar to The Killing Joke. And it's hardly original. Obviously they will take inspiration from the comic stories or unrelated media they like, and those bits of inspiration will be apparent in the final work. But I really applaud the idea of trying to tell their own version of the Joker without explicitly piggybacking off of established DC canon. We have plenty of retellings of comic Joker in film. Thats a big reason why Wonder Woman, Shazam, Aquaman were so popular. They were long overdue for the big screen. Its implied more than once he was the red hood though. Just all the details surrounding it are what can be questioned.
