In high school I got over 90% in all of my classes save for one - a 64% in Career and Life Management, which was easily the most useless class I ever took in any of my schooling. Instead of teaching potentially useful life skills (how to file taxes, basics of public speaking, basic home repair skills, how to negotiate with someone, so on and so forth), they taught us things that were either insipid or completely useless ("here's what a 'life goal' is and here's how you set them!"). The assignments were just horrible ("Make a list of 50 life goals for yourself") and as soon as I determined I'd completed enough of them to make it mathematically impossible for me to fail, I immediately stopped giving a shit about the class.

In university, the lowest grade I got was 51% in one of my chemical process engineering courses, but thanks to the fact that all of the classes I took were curved, that was actually good enough for a B. I still have nightmares about that class - it was fucking brutal.

50's for an average until I dropped Trig. Trigonometry got the better of me. Had a teacher that didn't really teach, she just went over the homework assignment from the previous class. She'd give us the hardest questions and we'd have to teach ourselves or spend hours with a tutor.

4 tests and a final compromised of 65% of our grade. My math was good. My math was perfect!

Well, for Algebra anyways, which I had just completed the previous semester. It was the first time I tried algebra in 15 years so that really embedded in my brain. Did great in Algebra. Not so hot in Trig

In high school I got a 40ish in AP English (passed the AP exam and got the credit, though!).

In college I got two Cs (70-79), both in my final year, and they kept me from graduating with honors :(

45. But that being a very low score for me my mom went and inquired about it and it turns out roughly half the class was failing some much worse so than me so it was a teacher problem. Hell part of the problem she made one assignment worth 45% of our grade for that grading period. And to anyone who paid attention it was obvious she played favorites.

What was the lowest grade that you ever got in a class?

Depends. Do you mean the lowest overall grade on a report card for a semester/final, or the lowest grade on an individual assignment or test?

My lowest individual grades were technically 0s for not bothering to do assignments or papers or projects or whatever, and my final grade was an F (mainly due to those 0s).

But for me, you could always tell my attitude towards my teacher by my report card grades. Almost all of my sub-C grades came from times when I absolutely hated a teacher and basically stopped doing work out of a sense of protest or no longer giving even the remotest of fucks. Usually it was a case where a teacher who clearly didn't give a shit about teaching and only still had a job out of tenure sort of spurred me into a "If you don't give a shit, why should I?" sort of mentality, and I'd kind of take on a disruptive anti-authoritarian sort of attitude in their class. But where I had teachers who were actively engaged and interested in their own material, or clearly wanted to help students, I tended to become a straight-A model student.

I'm absolutely convinced that my teachers would secretly debate about me in the teachers' lounge, with half of them complaining about how I was a little asshole and one of the worst students they've ever had, with the other half pointing out how I was the best student they ever had. I'd basically go from a class where I was a blatant teacher's pet to one where I'm certain the teacher probably wished I'd drop dead.

Growing up, if I got anything less than an A I'd be grounded and my folks probably would have disowned me if I got a C. Consequently, I graduated near the top of my class (although I went to public schools so that's probably not particularly meaningful).

For individual grades, I'm not sure I ever got anything under an 80% unless I flat-out didn't do an assignment.

I went to school with someone like that. He always used to have freak outs when I'd rebelliously skip homework because he just couldn't process the idea of not giving a shit about your grades.

After he took the SATs he was depressed because his older brother had gotten a 1450 while he'd only gotten a 1400 (back when the max score was out of 1600), so he was getting flack from his parents for not being good enough. But he pretty much shit his pants when I told him I'd gotten a 1410. For a test I was so chill about that I basically took a nap in the middle of it.

I once got a 3/100 on a stats exam.
That stats exam was worth 33% of my final grade.
The exam had 5 questions on it.
The class had no grading curve.

Ya'll lost this game. Spanish. Hated it. Studied the wrong tense and got an 8, a 1, and a 0. 3 tests and not even 10 points out of 100. Dropping the class gets you an automatic 50 for the year. 20 or 30 points added to my average to take something else? Hell yeah.

I had an Auto Tech class where I got punished for fucking up a job that someone else did. The teacher said he was going to have me re-do all of the assignments and cert tests before he'd let me back in the shop. I went to the counselor to try and drop the class and they gave me some bullshit about it being a 2-hour block and the school wouldn't let me drop it that late in the semester. I simply quit showing up and finished the class with like a 18% or something like that, lol.

Kinda put a ding on my GPA, but it was already pretty low anyway so I didn't really give a shit.

Lowest was probably my Criminal law class 68%. Right around the time I decided to drop out. Mostly I just didn't care about it. that class was the most bored I have ever been in college. Probably fell asleep 3/4 of the time. Everything else was over 85%.

Beyond those two low points, I don't think I've ever gotten any final course grades below a B-

Do you mean somebody like my parents? Because why the fuck would I care if you did or didn't do your homework? Some of my closest friends in high school were geeks, so their level of academic achievement could be next to nil. The ones who were the same year as me were from lower educational tracks so during the school day I'd only ever see them at lunch, electives, or study halls.

I lost track of some of them because I went to college and they didn't. Supposedly one of them got a girl pregnant and she ditched him and the child, so last I heard -- this was a while ago -- he was living with his folks with his child. But basically he voiced your exact opinion: Why try hard because you'll just be expected to work harder? Looking at his life, he *probably* should have tried a bit harder. A few of the other, more educationally inclined ones turned out fine. One of my upperclassmen went to college out of state, got a good job, married an ugly chick, had some kids, and afaik he's pretty happy. Some of the underclassmen were at least on college track, but I can't remember their last names so I have no clue what became of them although I've been curious at times.

In general, I guess this kinda hammers home the whole geeks-not-nerds thing. Nerds are smart and high-performers almost as a general rule, whereas geeks are always going to be a toss-up. That said, I'm *think* probably 2/3s of the kids I played cards with in school wound up either working low-end professions (or quite possibly not working at all). That's out of maybe 25 or 30 friends. Granted, a lot of my non-geek friends didn't really wind up doing a huge amount either, so.... maybe I just hung out with a lot of slackers and ne'er-do-wells?

I was a A and B student most of my life. But in the 10th grade my dad passed away in January. So I started getting Ds on my tests. My teachers all noticed because it was a sudden drop in my grade from Sept - Jan that they reached out.

I ended up salvaging my final grades with Cs and Bs.

I got put in a higher level math class after 2 months when I was a freshman in high school. Math was not my strong class anyway and being dropped into it at the second month I didn't know what the Hell was going on.

I talked to the counselor and he said he put me in there because my sister was smart and I could get out at semester if I wanted. I made a D one 9 weeks and an F the next and it averaged out to a D.

He would not let me out at semester. So I had to stay in there all year with a final grade of a D.

The grade kept me from being in Beta and brought my GPA down. My other classes I did pretty well.

Even in college my math class was more basic.
