I don't quite remember this being a big thing(except maybe when it first launched?), though some people of course do like it better.

I do remember the transition from FFVII being considered the best and then the popular opinion instead becoming VI and IX. If anything, I'd argue IX is a little overrated these days. I haven't played VI yet, though.

I don't think the majority think it's not that good. It's generally recognized as a good game, right? People say it's overrated when it's called the Best Game Of All Time and whatnot.

I think the TC's assessment is accurate. It was definitely overrated back in the late 90s and early 2000s, but public opinion has changed and the general consensus is in line with the quality of the game in my opinion.

My best friend has been going on about it being "overrated" for 20 years. All the reasons he gives has always been completely arbitrary or subjective, and I think it's honestly just due to him being contrarian after hearing people praise it as the best thing ever.

I've just really grown to hate the term. If millions of people still legitimately love something, then is it really overrated?

I think most if us have at least a lil resistance to conform just cause everyone else likes something. But there are definitely people who can't get over that unwillingness to "conform" and others who can be like "oh damn, I get it".

I had this exact experience with the 300 movie. Two of my friends would not stop going on about how hype it was when it released. I got so sick of hearing about it that I just decided I wouldn't like it and would never watch it.

Eventually a family member really wanted to see the movie so I ended up watching it with them and yeah... I had a great time. Sometimes your own mind can really be an ass.
