-Flareon: The player wins against the rival at Professor Oak's lab and either loses or skips the battle on Route 22 or vice versa.

Depends on the fight, but it should be the same all versions of R/B/Y, some you have to beat the Rival, such as in Silph Co or Pokemon League, others such as in Professor Oaks Lab you don't. Really though its not too hard to beat him, especially if you have potions.
