You are required to remain on site for 8 hours (you can take a lunch break, but this does not count towards your 8 hours). They want you there in the unlikely event that they need you, so you can't sleep and have to remain available. You have only a 10 year old laptop with no games (not even solitaire), and any personal items you usually bring to work (cellphone, books, etc).

What do you do for 8 hours?

I love downtime at work! I usually browse Reddit, make lists, or look up restaurants to try.

Edit: Oh, but if I am feeling helpful, I do some basic file maintenance. People just saving their crap all over the network! Making it look like their dang messy desktops.

Look up stuff on my phone. Watch YouTube. Play Switch. And sometimes, hook stuff up to the TV... Or watch murder porn/game shows if available...

Audiobooks. Plenty of great fantasy series out there with 3+ books that are each about 30 hours long. It's a very easy way to pass time while being ready to work at a moment's notice.

Podcast, as well. Plus, they have podcast for like everything. I like either Welcome to Nightvale. Or Terrible Warriors. Welcome to Nightvale is like a news station in a very weird town. Terrible Warriors is a podcast where they play tabletop RPGs. Its amazing!

I can sit in a daze for hours. NBD.

When I did that, needed to be on site to answer questions or solve problems that might come up, I carried a PSP, played it a lot, mostly Monster Hunter, racing games, Ace Combat, GTA, Gundam, etc. Same when I gave a ride to a friend to proctor her finals, sat in the faculty lounge with my PSP.

What kind of work do you do?

4th day of a 4 day deployment for a small company. Literally just 7 tablets and 5 laptops, which were handed out the previous days. Last day was for "tech support" in case anything went wrong. Had to remain on site all day, but nothing actually happened.
