You can rectify that issue today. Save 20% of your salary. Start with employer matches on 401k and then max out your Roth IRA. Today is the best day to start saving for retirement.

That said, I DO contribute to my IRA, so at least Im doing that.

The vast majority of people cant save 20% of their salary. Thats kinda the issue.

The 401k match is something everyone should do if available.

If you can't save 20%, then save what you can. That's just an ideal number that will set you up good after 30+ years.

It takes a disciplined approach to budgeting and spending to determine how much you can realistically live off of. I am sure many people here can find places to curb spending. Every dollar matters. Don't rack up debt, but use credit cards for rewards. Pay off interest bearing loans asap. Be conscious of where your money is going and you will find more ways to prepare for retirement.

Also, check to see if you can claim the $125 from the equifax data breach. Took me just 2 minutes to claim it.

I also have a Boeing pension, but its no longer a sweet, sweet one. In 2015 they froze it and I wont get any COLA increases until I retire. Its $1200 a month right now, but I wont be able to withdraw until 2037 at the earliest, 2047 for full $1200. If they had kept the pension accruing value it would have ended up like $7k a month if I spent my career there.

That's damn good for the company in terms of expenses, though. And good for the consumer too, although Boeing needs to get their shit together and make a good plane again.

About 2011 or 2012 years company was in not great circumstances and needed to change or by like 2030 they would be out of business. So a new cult like culture started to creep into the company. Being passionate about being a Boeing employee became more important than doing good work.

It really started with managers and flowed down from there. So new managers since about 2010 tend to be incompetent and at best know how to manage people, not processes.

Basically they are wanting people willing to work 60 hours a week for a salary based on 40 hours. And they dont care if that extra time results in more productivity, the leadership just wants you physically there.

So I just got fed up with it all. The state dont give a fuck other than showing up on time and leaving on time. You do that and do any work you are a God.

I also just started really hating Seattle.

My county job isn't so cushy anymore because the current regime is trying to run it like a private business. They're failing miserably because it's not feasible but the destruction happening in the meantime is crazy.

Shit, I forgot that I didn't answer that.

@Modifier You save 20% on min wage by mooching rent off others. You also acquire skills that allow you to demand more than min wages.

lol at this idea of mooching rent. Landlords are the moochers.

If landlords are moochers, then it should be easy for you to purchase property and rent it out?

What are you bitching about? If you have minimum wage, you're going to work forever. You can still save money, if you have other people to support you. You are only making an argument that you shouldn't stay at minimum wage forever. If you have any desire to not stay in that life, then you will find a way to make more money.

So again, wtf are you trying to prove?

The fact that only americans, afaik, in their "American Dream" lunacy believe that what happens to a person is actually a reasult of their choices or "free will". That is complete bullshit. You don't really have choices. It just appears you do. You really don't. So, the speech "everyone is responsible for their actions and their lot in life" may appeal nice to the capitalist american (because it gives a nice ring to capitalism) but it is completely false.
