The guy I arrested was 40 years old. I had his 80 something year old father come out and come take his car so he wouldnt be charged several hundred dollars to tow his car. That old man looked like he had beyond enough of his sons shit The familyis without a doubt affected, but I don't think anyone sets out in life to do that stuff to their friends and family. Coulda overdosed in said car that night. My brother and his friend used to do that shit. Had a BAD heroin issue, and they used to drive around, park, and shoot up. Endangering not only themselves, but others. Cop may have saved their lives by busting them at the time. Cuz my brothers friend? Yeah. He died on one of those trips. Im sure his friends and family would rather they had been caught instead to give them that one extra chance to maybe get help. It's basically the lesser of two evils. Though prisons generally do have drug problems too. I find that even the ones who did want to stop tend to get picked up by their friends and just talked back into it. They just kind of... become different people. The person you once knew is practically dead, and kicking opiates (not just heroin, many kinds) is a true living nightmare. One cute girl I knew got gangraped and had the shit beaten out of her for going to a bad part of town to get some, and even that wasn't enough to get her to quit. Fucking terrifying. My heart goes out to that guy's dad. His son may as well be considered dead by now, replaced by a shambling monster that gives glimpses of the son he once loved.
