Wife floated the idea of getting one. From what I understand you need a subscription to access the classes/workout routines. Otherwise, it's just like any other stationary bike, no? Is it worth it?

Some more detail for anyone interested: I used to do distance running (half-marathons and some full marathons), but blew up my hip about 7 years ago in a freak accident while playing with my dog. Running was my passion, but I've had three different doctors advise me not to engage in it anymore, for risk of making my hip worse. They recommended low-impact cardio (elliptical, which my wife bought but I absolutely loathe, or stationary bike were two they'd mentioned). Also used to be really into trail riding with mountain bikes before my kids were born, so I think I could get into the stationary bike thing, especially if they have some sort of trail riding workout.

I've been slowly getting fatter since I stopped running, as it's the only exercise I was really enthusiastic about. Would love to get back in shape and the Peloton seems enticing, but not sure it's worth sinking the money into a glorified stationary bike if the classes and routines in the subscription aren't enough to keep me going. I don't mind the subscription as I canceled my gym membership a while back (used to train on treadmills and do some lifting to balance things out), figure the subscription amounts to having the gym membership back...

Ive seen the commercials.

Yeah that's another thing I'm hesitant about, they seem real popular now but I wonder if it's a fad thing that'll die out in a year.

If you want less of a commitment, you could get a trainer to mount a regular bike on, so you aren't buying a fancy stationary bike just for this. If you get smart one, you can connect it with something like Zwift to make things a little more interesting and interactive than just watching netflix or whatever, as well as for tracking purposes. That gets more expensive, though.

Seems like a massively overpriced exercise bike. Last time I checked the cost was around $2500.

Plus you have to pay about $500/year subscription if you want to use the interactive instruction classes. I'm interested in one too but I just can't get past the expense. Not to mention they used to charge $1200 for the bike, so it really feels like you're getting ripped off.

It was interesting psychology that we teased out, Peloton CEO John Foley recalled in an interview last year with Yahoo Finance. In the very, very early days, we charged $1,200 for the Peloton bike for the first couple of months. And what turned out happening is we heard from customers that the bike must be poorly built if youre charging $1,200 for it. We charged $2,000 dollars for it, and sales increased, because people said, Oh, it must be a quality bike.

It's not really made for you.
