This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if both members of said duo are named in the title of a game (Banjo-Kazooie, Sam & Max Hit the Road, etc).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

Wrex - High fodder. And only because Shepard has obviously fallen a step himself, otherwise Wrex would be fodder line or even a low midcarder. He's extremely popular among ME fans and outdid a popular Smash character and a FF lead in CB9. No small feat whatsoever.

Those are just my gut feelings, really, though I have a hard time seeing the latter be anywhere else.

I agree with darkx about Wrex. I feel like he's likely to have fallen harder than Garrus but not as much as Shepard, compared to 2013.

Harley Quinn: Low midcarder. Very popular Batman character. I see cosplay of her done all the freaking time. I don't see her as fodder - in fact, she might win a match.

Slash: Guns N' Roses is awesome, thank you very much, but kids these days probably don't know who they are. Frightening. So while the older users will recognize him and vote for him if they suddenly get "Sweet Child O' Mine" stuck in their head or... not. He's low fodder since that's going to amount to, I don't know, 10% of voters tops.

Wrex: Agreed with High Fodder. His past performance is enough, but Mass Effect... my, how the mighty have fallen.

I never directly addressed it, but if a character has, say, 2 votes for Mid Fodder and 2 votes for High Fodder they will be placed into the High Fodder tier. Basically tie breaks will always default to the higher tier in those cases.

I agree with Low Midcarder for Harley. She is very popular and has a large role in both the Arkham and Injustice series. Even her Suicide Squad portrayal was considered a bright spot of the poorly-received film.

I will say High Fodder for Slash. I think a lot of Gfaqs users do know who he is and like GnR, and he might pick up some rogue votes from users who just think he looks cool. And the battle against him in Guitar Hero 3 was arguably the defining moment of the game (along with the Lou battle). GH3 seems to be well-liked on the site too. Only the youngest users will have no idea who he is - thanks in part to GH3.

Agree with High Fodder for Wrex.

This is the last time we saw a Guitar Hero game in action. Yes, the combination of Melee as its opponent and a match timed right when the instrument bubble was bursting wasn't ideal, but a defeat that stark gives me a hard time believing that anything Guitar Hero is worth anything at all.

Also, I highly doubt anyone who doesn't either truly love Guns N' Roses (probably 10% of this site at very most) or is simply apathy voting against a character they haven't heard of would actually vote for Slash as a video game character.

GH2 got a spot in GOTD due to popularizing the instrument game genre, but GH3 and Rock Band basically obsoleted that game within a few years due to their far superior song selection and added features. It's not surprising GH2 did badly. I believe I saw GH3 get surprisingly far in voting in the recent B8 Favorite game topic too. That said, Guitar Hero is only a small part of Slash's appeal to voters.

Slash was also in the band Velvet Revolver in the 2000s and is regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Fans of rock music in general might be inclined to vote for him due to this, not just GnR superfans.
