Always told myself that I'd rather be looking at a pretty lady than a pretty man. But could it also mean I identify as female?

If I have to spend a majority of the time I'm playing a game staring at a character's backside, I'll at least make it one I can stand to look at.

When I make characters for RPGs like Icewind Dale or Kingmaker I tend to choose whichever portrait picture I like for each character then set their gender to match the picture.

Sometimes I play male other times female. The reasons vary from game to game, sometimes it's because I like the character customization better, sometimes it's because I get sick of playing generic mid-twenties white guy with brown hair, sometimes it's because I want to RP a character a certain way.

One major factor is also the voice actor, like in Mass Effect I liked femshep's voice actor better (especially in me2, Mark Meer sounded like he had a sinus cold) I also liked the way femshep interacted with the crew better. In FO4 I like the female VA better too.

I don't feel like I identify with a female more than a male, it's really just not a big deal what gender I play in a game.

Being bi I usually just go with whatever I feel like at the moment. Sometimes it boils down to its far easier to make one good looking or I like the outfits/armor they get more. Like in fallout i generally sucked at making a decent looking guy so I usually made women. In elder scrolls my first file is always a wood elf male as I just like wood elves in general but never liked how female elves looked in elder scrolls.

It usually boils down to armor sets looking more fitting on slender frames. Used to have issues with game where Id roll male and find textures looking blocky or stretched because of the character model, then try it on a female character and see it looks less stretched.

If theres no difference at all, I play either or.

tbh for me it just has to do with roleplaying. like in fallout and stuff i'm usually a dude because it's more appealing and natural for me to dig into the idea of a grizzled survivalist dude

that's a little dramatic. i've played as a girl just because i liked how she looked before, not really a reason to judge dudes that intensely for it unless you're just projecting

Generally speaking if i have all options (and they are equal) i play as a male. There are times i'll randomly decide to play as a woman, specifically with mmos i don't plan on playing for a long time, I might pick a female avatar.

I have nothing against playing as a woman, but my opinion on online games has soured due to the amount of dudes pretending to be women, and i'd hate to be lumped in with them.

I played as a female in Splatoon, Splatoon 2, and Saints Row 4, but as a male in Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade Chronicles X.

So, it depends, but female characters do tend to have better customization options.

If the option is available, I'll play as a female. I typically want to see what, if anything, the writing and story does to accommodate the difference in gender. As most game developers are male, they tend to consider the male default and the female ancillary, and I like to see what efforts are made to differentiate.

The only time I won't is when I know I'll be invested in my role in the story and there's a potential relationship involved. If that's the case, I'll go the immersion route and play male. I played male in Mass Effect. I played female in Skyrim. Despite being able to have a relationship in Skyrim, I didn't feel so invested in my role in the story that I needed the immersion.

This. Most games where I have a choice I try out a female character first. They also often get better customization options in a lot of games, so I find that aspect more fun. Sometimes the male character is just better, though, so I'll pick them then.

I play as male religiously in all games since that is what I would prefer to be identified as. I'm not distracted by what my ass looks like smh.

I'm pretty 50/50 on playing girls and guys in games. It depends entirely on what I'm going for with the character. Depends on the weapon and armors and such, I try to make this aesthetically pleasing. EX: I tend to make huge top-heavy guys for big savage high-Strength characters. Nimble ninja-like Dexterity characters are usually girls. Magic users can go either way. I can make dark-knight-ish edgelords be either gender, both can work with a slightly different aesthetic.

Fighting games, again I'm pretty 50/50 but do play more guys than girls (probably because fighters usually have more guys than girls in the cast so that's statistically likely). I guess more like 70/30. I think I actually really like playing the huge Big Body grappler guys the most.

I don't think which you choose to play says much about your gender expression. At best, if you're a heterosexual guy that always plays pretty girls, it probably just means you're a thirsty waifu lord. Which is whatever, do you, rock on, once in a while I'll play chicks just because I think they're hot. OTOH I've met (cis) gay guys that only the pretty girls, heh, so take that observation with a grain a salt.

Incidentally, I don't think I've ever met a chick that doesn't main chicks as well. Not to say they never play guys, but girls tend to play girl characters.

I find that this doesn't work anymore. Everyone just makes women in MMOs lol. Another reason to play guys in games, they tend to be so over saturated with pretty girl avatars that playing a guy actually makes you stick out like an individual in a sea of waifus.

I play as male in everything except in World of Warcraft because I hate how the male models looks. Females get this super agile, bad ass look. Males all look like the Mountain from Game of Thrones. It just looks so stupid. Imagine putting the Mountain in a dress. There's your mage! Then there's the fact that male dranei have an Octopus on their face.

I create both. For me it depends. I never make female warriors. Ever. Just doesn't fit in my head canon. However, stealth types and ranged types I'll make women of.

I've played WoW for a few years now and I've noticed something that probably applies to many RPGs.

Some players want their characters to be a representation of them and they get very invested in a single character. Sure, they might choose a non-human race, but otherwise their character needs to be as close in abilities and personality to their real selves as possible. They also find it hard to make other characters because they never feel as authentic as their main. These are also the players that are more likely to get into RP.

Then there's players like me who just want to experience as much of the game as possible. My main changes in WoW every expansion depending on which class I want to play, and I try to pick a different class each time. I don't personally identify as any of my characters so I'll just make them look interesting. Some races look goofy as females like Tauren (though male ones aren't much better) so I make them male, while others like Night Elves look better as females (the male eyebrows are way too much). Plus I was interested in how the playing experience changes as a female (it doesn't unless you go out of your way). The gender makes more of an impact in games like Dragon Age though. I also think a lot of male races in WoW look funny as cloth-wearers because a lot of robes look like dresses.

I'm sure there are players that fall into the first category but also play a character of the opposite sex. I have no idea what that means about them, but it's no weirder than making a character a non-human race IMO. And there are PLENTY of roleplayers in WoW that play as elves.

I pick chicks unless the game has strong relationship aspects. Like Mass Effect. I was raised by women and I just respect them more than men. Not that I don't respect my boys
