Price of living in the greatest city in the world. When I lived there, I shared an apartment with 3 other folks in Washington Heights for about $2100 a month (and it incrementally rose every few months) and was making $500 a week for my internship. I left in 2014 since I quit my job prematurely and ran out of time to find another one.

Not sheriff srs.

On a more serious note Im at a complete loss how the fuck rent control would make rent even more ridiculously expensive.... so if anyone cares to explain how rent control would turn a $2100 3bed apt into a $3000+ 3bed apt Im all ears.

I mean, I'm sure the answer is moreover landlords finding ways around it, so the opposite of rent control causing it.

$10 for a hotdog from a street vendor - include a can of pop and it's $15

Rent control makes it less attractive to build and maintain rental units. Existing units get converted to condos. Most new construction ends up being luxury apartments because it's much more likely to be profitable. Lower the supply of affordable housing and surprise, the cost goes up.

Rent control benefits the very small percentage of people who live in one apartment for decades. Housing costs go up for everyone else.

Explain more? Like what methods and strategies do they use and why isnt it a criminal offense? Surely a hefty fine or jail time would deter excessive amounts of fuckery by shitty landlords.

I mean, my area has a you + 2 rule (you and max two unrelated roommates). Essentially with a growing population its a fuck you to landlords who own 4-5 bedroom houses and a fuck you to tenants who dont wanna pay $1000mo ( rather than $3k / 5) and have two empty bedrooms. As a result landlords will tell two roommates to get a PO Box address and dont park all 5 of your cars in the driveway.

Afaik, which isn't much, the preferred method is just to not own buildings that qualify for rent control, as the above poster noted.

Ahh I see. Like said my city has a growing population and rent is average $600-$700 here, back in 2012-13 average was $300. Growing population, no rent control, brand new apartments get built, charge $700mo and they neighbor thinks they can hike the price up an extra $400 a month despite the place being 20+ yrs old and half the appliances dont work.

if you're that same guy who's having that rental problem they have to give you a pass really depends on the landlords mercy rating.
the rents have been jacking up the past 5 years. used to be able to find places for 600$. now it's 1k dollars (across the board) even on newer rentals. the scales top out at 1.5k a month if like living near the beach.

I was an introvert who stuck to his room and also accepted the fact that I barely had any money so it was no problem to me. I will say it didn't at all feel like a community as my roommates and I rarely got together to do things. Most people who I invited to my place all hated it as it was so small, 8 by 12 feet, compounded by roommates who had twice the floor space for the same rent. When I find a reason to go back to live in NYC, and if I had the chance, I'd go back to that apartment to rent it out all for myself since it was situated 2 minutes from the A train, was at the top of the building with a fire escape and had a view of the Hudson river. That view, especially when the moonlight reflected on the water, kept me sane in school.

But really, it's not a very nice place to live. I liked it only because I rarely had anything that I could consider mine and not owned by anyone else. It was first thing I could claim as my own... sort of.

A matter of preference? Any place that's next to the Hudson river and I have a view of the water and am at the top of building with access to the fire escape ladder from my window. My standards are super low in general. I have no problem wasting an hour in the subway since I find it relaxing.

One of my old roommates hinted that he did some stuff to stay in the city. With how artsy he is, I wouldn't be surprised if he sold his body for survival. And he would always, ALWAYS ask me for money every other bloody week. He'd pay me back, but Jesus, what kind of life are you living if you can't budget out food for your next week?
