See someone complaining about Trump calling himself a nationalist so I googled the definition to see if I was crazy

It's been generally bad in Europe at least since the Nazis but it's making a comeback. It tends to be paired with hating people with a different skin colour/ethnicity/background to them, hatred of other religions, and targeted killings.

There's on thing being proud of your country. There's another thing wanting to ensure non-whites are on the bottom equally.

I'm not sure you did. Discussions of nationalism in my education were always in the context of the World Wars that resulted from it.

Nationalism is always about ethnics.

Example.
Who is French?

Who is Japanese?

Who is Zimbabwean?

Answer:
1. Could be a person of Chinese descent.

2. Could be someone with arabian descent.

3. Could be someone of British descent.

These were likely not your answers though and thus Nationalists would kick them out for being descended from another nation despite being citizens.

I will say I feel like we're inching towards a society of "ultranationalists", though.

Nationalism is probably just standard boomer talk. Being unhinged enough to take up arms to "fight for what you believe in" is scraping ultranationalist thinking.

You learned about nationalism being a driving force behind both World Wars in middle school.

nationalism can be a positive thing in the context of, say, a marginalized people ousting a dictator (like in the Cuban revolution). it's very different when the nation has historically been an oppressor (like in the US)

Well WW2 was also partly due to the effects of the Versailles Treaty giving Germany some bad fallout. Hitler just managed to steer that fiscal hardship into xenophobia.

Nationalism is about having a shared national identity. That's it.

Do you feel American? Do you think of yourself as an American internationally? That's really all that matters.

Nationalism didn't start out the way it is today.

It really began with the Revolutions of the 1800's.
Most notably 1848.

It wasn't a force of exclusion or "My country is better than yours"
Back then it was a force of unity, liberation and camradery.
For example the several attempts of German unification. The Italians and Hungarians attempts to unify and toss out the Hapsburgs.

Then the 1900's happened, and the whole idea got ruined for everyone just like the Chaplin mustache and the Swaztika
