Alright so we have 3 cats and 2 dogs. We lock the dogs in the bedroom with us at night, so the cats can run around the rest of the house.

Weve been doing this for years, everyone knows the routine.

Recently, our oldest cat (8 yrs old), has come up with a new quirk. Starting around 4-5 am, hell start howling at the bedroom door to be let in. Hell also use his 15lb to stand up and knock against the door.

Weve tried ignoring him and letting him cry it out, hell do this for an hour no problem.

Weve tried reprimanding him.

Weve tried letting him in. Sometimes he wants back out literally two minutes after entering, sometimes he makes you pet him indefinitely.

This has been going on for about five days now, and I really fucking need a full night of sleep.

Just how weve always done it.

One of the dogs would be fine, but the other would go eat all the cat food and such.

Maybe if we get a doggy gate or something. But the other cats are really noisy, when playing throughout the house.

Yeah you shouldn't be leaving food out unless they are still very young and active, but even then there are plenty of solutions around this... don't leave the food out that the dog can get it. It should be pretty easy to stick it somewhere the dog has zero access too (up high is always a winner).

As long as they aren't overweight, it not really an issue.

We got a clear double sided tape thats made specifically for this.. wont hurt the cat or your paint. One of our cats got into a horrible phase last year where he just hits the door and wants to be let in and then would leave right away. As soon we put it in, he hit once and never did it again. We ended up removing it a couple weeks later and they never did it again

Their feeding schedule isnt the issue. The dogs are not the issue. Please stay on topic.

You putting it on the door or floor? Assuming door since you mentioned paint, but just want to be sure.

Its only a problem when hes waking us up at 4 am, for days on end. I have no problem petting him for an hour, otherwise.

Our cat started doing that in his later years. We trained him to stay away from the door. Basically we got a vacuum and a special type of device that you plug into an outlet that has a remote control for power. We would plug the vacuum in that with it powered on, but use the remote to turn it on and off. We kept it outside the front door.

So when kitty cried at the door, we reached for the remote and powered the vacuum for a few seconds. After a few days of doing this, kitty would stop. Wed leave the vacuum out a few days after that, then eventually take it down completely.

Damn, good job on that.

Also for TC, have you thought about wearing the cat out with a Laser pointer?
I noticed when my cat is acting up, if I give him some laser love it tends to chill him out.
Maybe a little extra stimulation is the itch he needs scratching.

I've noticed you said that the cats play at night. Have you tried sleeping during the day? Also, try to go to scheduled feeding as free fed cats tend to eat when they want.

This is a great idea. Have a link for said device? Our cat hates the vacuum.

As far as the energy level/laser pointer, hes pretty tame. Hes either 8/9 now, and mainly just wants to cuddle or have his belly rubbed.

He played more when he was younger, but has calmed down considerably.

Might be because our other two cats are much younger, and thus harder to keep up with.

I really dont think their diet/free feeding is the problem. They have access to their food, water, and litter. So Im not sure how that would change anything.

Its always been that way, and this is a new issue

Oh and its free feeding in the sense that I give them a big cup of dry food every night.

Sometime theyll have food left over the next night, sometimes they clear through all of it by morning.

Its not like they have an entire bag of food sitting in front of them.

(They get wet food occasionally)

Oh yeah and if you try the vacuum thing, its probably good for a few months. Eventually our cat started up again but we would just do the same thing again whenever he did and it worked every time.

Put away the things that make noises that annoy you at night?

I must be lucky. My cat goes to bed when I do and waits for me to get up before she gets up.

Get one of those motion sensing compressed air sprayers. They're made specifically for keeping animals away from places you don't want them at. The cat gets near the door he gets blasted with some air. After a few times it'll learn.

Or just lock them all in another room.

Hmm that sprayer may work!

I dont wanna lock them ALL up, 2/3 are doing nothing wrong.

If it came down to it, I would lock him up in the their room. But let the other two roam.

My recommendation would be to leave your door open.

Any catfood and such that you are afraid a dog will eat, simply pick it up and put it out of their reach. Try putting it on a table or counter or something so the cats can get to it but not the dogs.

Yeah, this might be the easiest as far as the cat goes.

We have these baby gates, with a cat door at the bottom, which opens independently from the actually gate.

I dont think our smallest dog can fit through it anymore, but she could when she was a puppy.

Could try one of those.

Wouldnt want to leave it totally open though
