I look forward to the day Epic gives up and this exclusive crap is gone.

Why though? We as gamers aren't owed anything for a product we haven't bought.

On that same token developers aren't entitled to sales. If they want consumers to buy their product it's in their best interest to make it widely available as possible. But fuck why give a shit when Epic is shelling out that sweet sweet Fortnite money for exclusive rights.

So what you're saying is it's in their best interest to take the money but you need something to be angry about.

Publishers who got paid to be exclusive on a game by game basis and still have other games on steam.

All the more reason for Tencent to subsidize publishers and undercut Steam, create a monopoly, and then become grossly consumer-hostile.

They just seem to be doing this in the wrong order.

How many stories have we heard about layoffs or outright studio shutdowns because sales aren't where they're supposed to be in the last few years? The only ones safe from this are well established developers that have a decade plus of success in the industry to fall back on. It's stupid not to take the money upfront in this age of gaming and risk it all right out the gate.

Why do people keep giving this dev attention? Its blatantly obvious, to me at least, that they took their Epic cash, then intentionally started acting like asses to their kickstarter backers and gamers as a whole to generate a bunch of free press for their game.

The guy just needs to learn to stop talking.

They're in the whole mess they're in specifically because he couldn't help but run his mouth. The sad truth is that if he had just said "we're taking Epic's deal, it was the only way we could have moved forward" there might have been some people who were disappointed but the outright vitriol would have been far, far more contained, and for a lot less effort.

At this point he only digs himself deeper and deeper. I doubt there's anything he can say anymore that will not worsen his position.

I'd say to use all that newfound cash to hire an actual PR guy because he's absolute shit at it, but instead they let said cash get to their heads, and it's too late for them now anyway. It's obvious to anyone why they only started to show their true colors underneath the cutesy exterior at the precise moment in time that they did -- it's because that was the precise moment it stopped mattering.

Nobody sane is condoning the vitriol and death threats, but really, you also can't just go a complete 180 and say that these people did nothing to fuel the flames directed against them. They were doing so ever since their initial announcement.

Probably not the best place to ask, but if the developer gets a deal that covers a minimum sale amount from Epic, what happens to the revenue from game sales up to that amount? Does it all go to the publisher, to cover their publishing and funding costs?

Unless you're a self published indie, epic isn't contacting the dev at all. The dev and publisher have their arrangements, the publisher and epic have theirs. How the epic money is split is between the dev and publisher

The only difference is Origin was using their own stable of In-House IPs and developers to create games exclusively for that platform. You can't get them anywhere else. Epic isn't producing anything other than Fortnite.

Nobody would have as much a problem if they were creating games for their own platform that people wanted to play. Instead, Epic is buying exclusivity rights. Timed exclusives are anti-consumer no matter which way you slice it. I don't agree with it when it happens on console, and I sure as shit don't agree with it when it happens on PC.

peoples reaction to this whole ooblets thing is gross and honestly sort of saddening, the amount of abuse I've seen directed at the devs over it is not even close to justifiable in any way

even the people acting mostly reasonable and then saying "oh they were asking for it with their blog post though" are being abusrd. there's nothing wrong with the blog post. its only "problem" (if you even want to call it that) is that it's a blog post that exists in a world where a large part of the vocal gaming community are stuck-up self-centered obnoxious buffoons. which isn't really a problem with the blog post after all huh

Stop oppressing gamers please.

Seriously though the Devs are trolling and acting just as bad as the morons flaming them. They knew what they were doing but when the backlash they sought out came they cried harassment

There is a lot that's wrong with the blog post, unless you think being talked down to and condescended to by people just because they suddenly got a lot of money elsewhere and they're now feeling safe and untouchable... is normal behavior. We have a name in the dictionary for those types of people; they're snobs, and it's not something to be proud about.

Not to mention the gross false equivalences and the whole "this isn't so bad, it could be worse; just look at all the starving children in Africa!" mentality that can be used to (crappily) defend all sorts of scummy behavior.

Which is super hypocritical, since they are in turn whining about people whining about them, when there are children starving in africa.

Ooblets devs had perfectly valid reasons for taking the deal. Left at that, things would have been fine. But no, they're assholes. Their post and all reactions and responses from them since then have been petty, stupid, and mean towards their supporters and gamers in general.

Now, some reactions towards them go to far, as they sometimes do. And making fake screenshots was just stupid. But they deserve most of the hate coming their way.

Ah yes because gamers openly embraced origin. Wait no they hated it and cried, then once they had to use it for mass effect, dragon age, battlefield or w/e other popular ea game that we totally hated but ran out to buy we realized hey another launcher isn't a big deal.

I wouldn't mind this storefront if Epic went about this whole thing differently

Name another way. Hint, Every answer you have will fail. We've been through this will countless other stores If you dont have quality exclusives or are significantly cheaper then people will stay on steam where most of their library is.

Gamers are such fucking babies. Its another launcher. Exclusives are a non issue. Epics shit security is the only legitimate issue with the epic store.

remember when you spent years whining about anet and guild wars only then proceeded to con an underaged kid in new New Zealand to buy you a copy of gw factions so you could keep playing new content?

I don't like the Epic Store at all but I don't blame developers for taking money deals. It's a big opportunity for indie developers.

I don't think Ooblets was set up to be some massive sales hit on Steam either. I don't think we would have had any discussion about that game on here if this wasn't a thing.

Again, they are using their own in-house developed IP's to promote their platform. That's when people gradually got over it. Epic isn't doing the same thing, therefore people are pissed off.
