Aww man... I can't believe it... Holy crap... 200 pounds gone...

April 1 2018:
- 445 pounds
- Size 6X shirts
- Size 58 jeans

August 8 2019:
- 245 pounds
- Size 2X shirts
- Size 40 jeans

What a journey! I've still got maybe about 30 - 40 pounds left to lose, but holy crap... I'm so glad I got started. Life was way too hard last year. So many little things in life are much easier now.

I'm taking another new badge picture at work today. I took another badge picture when I lost 100 pounds, and now it's that time again. I can't believe it. I've probably stepped on the scale 5 times this morning, lol.

That's really awesome man. How do you feel? What changes have you experienced in your life, and how people treat you?

Also, do you have a lot of excess skin?

I feel amazing. There's so many things that are different now.

- I fit in my computer chair at home
- I fit in the chairs at work
- I fit in seats at movie theaters
- I fit in seats in airplanes and don't need the seatbelt extender
- I fit in other people's cars and don't struggle to put the seatbelt on
- No more back pain with walking for ~20 seconds or standing for more than a minute or so
- If I have to go from the 1st to the 2nd floor at work, I'm taking the stairs instead of the elevator... Running up the stairs and skipping every other step at that...
- When I went to Charleston, SC for work a few months ago, I walked about 54 miles in 8 days and had no issues. I decided not to rent a car just to see what I could do with walking.

I think excess skin may be an issue, but I'm not gonna worry about that right now. I'm focused on losing maybe another 30 - 40 pounds and then I'll switch my primary focus to bulking up with muscle mass.

Wow dude, I had no idea you were that big of a guy. Great job losing all that weight.

What has your routine been since you started? I'm assuming a mix of diet and exercise?

On April 1 2018, I finally decided to get serious about losing weight... I went back to cooking all of my food again... Lost about 25 pounds between April 1 2018 and July 25 2018 I lost about 25 pounds.

A co-worker talked to me about joining a crossfit gym she went to around the corner from work... I decided to try it. Lost about 30 pounds in the 1st 6 weeks and decided to keep it going. It cost like $500 to start, but they had some kind of deal where you either get the $500 back or you can use that $500 toward the cost of your membership if you lose 20 pounds in 6 weeks. So I kept going...

I've lost 175 pounds since July 25th 2018.

My problem pretty much my whole life is that I didn't know that I was overeating. It didn't matter too much when I was little because I was very active. I was always outside running, biking, rollerblading, skateboarding, swimming, playing football with friends, etc. I also played football (American) in 8th grade.

The summer before 9th grade, I got viral meningitis, which caused me to start having seizures randomly. It was no longer safe for me to do pretty much anything outside any more because I would just immediately black out and have a seizure maybe 2 to 4 times per year. So I just got used to sitting inside and doing nothing but playing video games and playing saxophone. I was still eating the same amount of food, though, so I started gaining weight like crazy.

Going into my adult years, I still didn't understand that I was overeating, so I was continuing to gain weight. I didn't understand why, but never really put much time into figuring out proper nutrition.

When I joined the crossfit gym last year, they had me use an app called Better Human to track what I eat by weight and keep under a certain amount of protein/carbs/fats/calories per day. I started out going to the crossfit gym 3 times per week. I'm now going 5 times per week.

I did a DXA scan on July 27 2019... According to that, I had 185.5 pounds of lean tissue (muscle, organs, bones, skin) at the time. So I probably have a good amount of muscle mass at this point, but I wanna see how much stronger I can get over time.

185.5 lean is strong as hell without working out. For reference, I'm 174lbs with a bit of a beer belly.

I've been trying to lift heavier and heavier on strength days at the gym. One of the things I deluded myself into believing last year was "Yeah, I'm really big, but I must be pretty strong to be able to move all this weight."

Then I started at the gym and realized I wasn't strong at all, lol. It was one of the most humbling experiences. I couldn't bench 115 pounds. Yesterday I benched 115 pounds 50 times over the course of the 2nd part of the workout.

You probably have a lot of strong muscles but then a lot of muscles like stabiliser muscles etc. that you've never used.

Lifting is also a movement and strength is an CNS adaption, so basically you're gonna lack muscle memory in those strength exercises, which will make you weak.

I think you will progress pretty fast though.

I don't have a ton of experience with crossfit, but I have read up a lot on it, watched videos and have discussed it with fitness trainers.

Crossfit isn't that great for you in the long run. The methods and technique they push just is not conducive to healthy joints and tissue.

It obviously helped you lose a lot of weight and I can assume that's because you were going very light with high repetitions.

What I would suggest is drop cross fit once you get to your weight point. Get a gym partner and research different exercises and on your own go to a proper gym.

Another great work out is obviously yoga and even check for local boxing gyms that offer classes for great cardio.

These are just my sentiments, you do you.

Be careful how fast you lose weight. The human heart takes a while to adjust. You could very well be lining up for a heart attack. Don't get me wrong you obviously need to lose weight but don't rush it.

I have mixed feelings towards crossfit because while I agree with you on every point, I also don't know any other gimmick that has been so successful in getting people to actually work hard at the gym and change their lives.

Like so many gimmicks are built on the idea that you can cheat your way to success, whereas crossfit just gets people into a mindframe where they need to work hard, consistently over time.

I think it deserves praise for that.

Also if you want a laugh, here's brian shaw decimating some crossfitters at like 10% effort:

The only thing it does is give a false sense of accomplishment which, I agree, pushes people to actually train.

Which is why I said grab a gym buddy. Someone who will PUSH you. That's all cross fit is. It's a collective group of people who mainly use it for a social function that happens to lift weights. They push one another to go because it's where they meet up and hangout.

And proof of why I hate cross fit is that the guy in all pink just starts dropping weight at the end of the lift to keep himself going cause he didn't want to properly finish the lift.
