I get the distinct feeling that Jon is not going to be involved in Dany's story the way he was in the show, but by combining elements of Aegon with Jon they basically had to rush all the made up Night King stuff to get him to Kings Landing at the end. So even if the writing hadn't been complete shit, they still would have had a really weird situation where the big bad they set up is killed halfway through the season so they can get to all the Dany going mad stuff at the end.
