didn't foresee a mafia game having trouble reaching 13, honestly. Even knowing summer is over.

As (mostly) an observer to this community, I think the way that last game went was a tipping point of sorts.

I view mafia as something that often brings out the worst in people, myself included. This certainly also includes Blade, whom I would say it applies even more to than myself.

I feel like a lot of people have been shading more towards the darkness lately in this community, and that last game is what made some people especially the hosts) realize this.

There's a lot of subconscious unease in the air about the game of mafia. If you wanted to "save" the community, the best thing to do would be to wait for a fairly significant time (at least a couple of months before another mention of it) before trying to reboot mafia.

It's that darkness that causes the bulk of the fatigue for players. It's that same darkness that cripples me so much I had to take 2-3 games off at a minimum before playing again. There's a reactive/crisis part of me I've shown exactly one time in the past year out of mafia. I show it multiple times almost every game of mafia. I feel as of right now I have already gotten all the positive I can get out of it.

This is also why the players who barely/half invest generally have longevity, like Pj for example. He's one of the few people detached enough from the game not to be totally poisoned by it, except he gets treated like garbage half the time for that approach. I'm not innocent in this either.

I personally think it's just an inherently toxic game and that a lot of people in this community have more or less outgrown having it in their lives. I'm not sure that's a bad thing, to be frank.

I have to get back to work and end this now, but if I had more time I'd probably have more to say.

I disagree that it's *inherently* toxic, but it can easily tend in that direction given the mechanics and even the theme.

It's not that the game is toxic. It is that the outrage culture is getting stronger and stronger and more and more things are something to get all up in arms over.

The game is a game. Anything said in game is part of the game. It means nothing (unless it goes beyond the game).

We have people who literally can't handle playing a game if not everyone plays the game the way they want them to.

I don't entirely agree with Corrik, but I think it's important to be able to dissociate our game emotions and person from how we feel about people outside of mafia.

With that said, we've had a long established rule of not invoking real life stakes within the game, such as "if you lynch me and I'm scum I will literally give you my house". And I think we tread dangerously close to that line when we say things like "if you lynch me you are the dumbest person in existence and I'll never be able to respect you as a person". They might not be tangible but it still feels like lasting or permanent stakes are being raised. And the more we lean into that type of dialogue the worse it gets.

It can be difficult (see: impossible) to play in a vacuum, though so I'm not sure where that leaves us.

Alright people.. this is a very sad state of the mafia. Do we need a state of Mafia Address? Some people take the game way to seriously grannet that can be a good thing when done tastefully. While others they take it far they bring personal things into it they personally attack someone over spelling, Grammer, having a hard day in the real world (only seen this once forever ago) insulting people, and just being rude to one another in general. This shouldn't feel like a Chore or like a hostile place. This is meant to be a fun and an escape from the real world so its sad to see people feel like this isnt that anymore to some people. I know yes lives get busy and that plays into some people not being active and unable to play. Maybe this is just a time where peoples lives are just to busy but doesnt seem like it.

Again who am I? Im newish still and id say not even good at mafia but i enjoy it. So i mean id love to play again or host or see mafia go back to being more friendly and an escape and not a chore.

Look it's yinz own fault for not understanding that the game is a game. Outrage culture will whine about the littlest thing these days, like if I call yinz a fucking idiot for a week and then draw upon the power of hell to incinerate your material form with the flames of Darkness. Snowflakes tbh. Haven't yinz ever played team sports where yinz spend all yinz time lambasting yinz idiot teammates? Or told yiz grandma to go to hell on family game night? As one of the hosts who chose the call the game. It certainly could've been worse. But part of the decision was to reinforce the standards set after WWE. So while some may have thought stuff was "tame." I was hoping to reinforce a standard of decency towards each other that I wholly believe we can reach.

I don't think we need a state of mafia address or anything. It just seems like there's not a lot of interest at the moment as lives, jobs, and school have picked up for people. Someone will get the itch to host again and it'll likely come back. I might try to host a game over Christmas, or play a game around that time. For now though I'm happy to be anyone's cohost and balance checker like Reg has been doing.

I just want to make clear that the only reason I have no interest in playing is strictly gameplay based. Too many inactives and too many people trying to hotshot/strongarm plays just because it's their play. It's just not a fun game to play when so much of your playerbase is doing one of those two things.

But at the same time I was probably a big contributor to the "darkness" that turned a lot of people off to the game so whatever probably for the best that I'm not interested!

That sucks I liked the guy for what little interaction I had. Was hoping he'd play more mafia around here too cause he wasn't bad at it despite the relatively low activity-- he at least understood that cooperating with people you think are town is generally pro town which is huge.
